Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

You were dreaming

LOL

I had to have 1-7/8 headers custom built. No one offers anything that comes close to fitting that I know of.

Is there a reason you can't use these?

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

That is the very question.. I can also buy a set of them and make changes if they do not fit. I would like 1 7/8 though.

Custom headers range from 1400-1800..

Custom shop in Dallas suggested buy the 1 3/4 set for a couple hundred bucks and make the change

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, I want a bigger set of BBC headers for my truck and nobody makes them past 2". I have to get a custom set made.

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

Thanks for the link, I just did a quick look and see he has listed for 73 and up in 2-1/4, would be interesting to try a set.

I debated with myself last year and will likely stick with custom in my case due to a few reasons.

I'm going with 2-1/4 stepped to 2-3/8, I will have a rear engine plate that right now my one passenger side tube is in the way for, and I don't have a stock front crossmember or motor mounts so that frees up lots of room for primary routing. I'm also running a rack so I have a steering shaft to deal with. So more I look at it, my truck is nowhere near needling a stock fitting header.

I had bought a bigger set of car headers thinking the I'll mod part and decided wasn't worth the time or effort for something that might not work in the end anyway. Sometimes you just have to bend over and take one in the wallet to get what is best, I just wish it was less often LOL.

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

I wish you could use mine! They are too little, 2 1/4 to 2 3/8 into a 4 1/2 collector.

Yeah sorry for the high jack.

Hmmm you have 12* heads, correct?? I haven't locked in any engine build yet.

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

These aren't 1-7/8 and I don't know if these are still being made, but it might be something to check into.

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

CFAB

I looked at the photos and I am not sure about some of them. It looks line that are not running stock motor mounts.. the big deal with the header hanging down low ???? I duck my pipe under the frame rail and run it along side the frame on the outside and then exit in front of rear tire.

They like very nice and I put a call into them but not open yet. Will find out more info. I have to say that the 299 dollar headers in 1 3/4 and maybe 200 to custom fit them to my truck is not sound so bad..
Or maybe MARV has a extra set of his custom ones left over...

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

All it takes is a $1000 and custom 1-7/8 can be yours LOL

Of course... I am using a front and mid plat and not the side mounts so you may have some 'fitting' to do LOL

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

Thanks Marv as always you are the guy... well sort of..

I fail to see why no one has ever built at least a 1 3/4 3 inch collector header for this truck WTF

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

I guess I am failing to see what is different about your '63 Steve, that an off the shelf header won't work? Even though they are marketed for the '73-'87 trucks, the frames are not much different in the engine bay area. Those same headers in a 1.625 tube will work just fine in the '63-'66 trucks. Even with a mechanical clutch. IIRC don't you have a hydraulic clutch?

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

I am now running a 4L80E trans. Is sold off the TKO 600 trans and quick time housing.. All in one shot. Got tired of shifting in the big city traffic. It's not that I will not buy the header but I guess what I am looking for is some one that has bought the later header which is 68+ it and bolted it on?
I will not be massaging the firewall as it's a finished item.

I agree whats the big deal but I would think some thing has changed as they are not hte same part number and no header company can confirm it will fit

Re: headers for 63 1/2 ton

I have used the Hedman 69090's which are just a 1.625" tube version of the 69080's, on a few '63-'66 trucks and they fit just fine. Those are marketed for the '67-'87 pickups. No need to modify the firewall or frame. I have also used the Hedman 69110 BBC headers on the '63-'66 trucks. No firewall modifications but the frame does need the top flange trimmed back since the '67 and earlier trucks did not come from GM with big blocks.
