Speedometer Question

I had a engine/trans put in my 83 Scottsdale. When I got it back he said my speedo would not work because the new transmission had some electronic part that my old speedometer would not work with. To get a working speedometer would I just need a electric speedometer? Or is it far more detailed than that? What would I need to get a working speedometer?
