Numbers matching?!

Alright friends I'm in need of your wisdom. I'm trying to really learn how to find out whether a car is "numbers matching". Take my 63 long bed for instance. From what I understand, a numbers matching car has the VIN on the body, the frame and the engine.

I believe for our trucks they aren't really called VINS they are called Serial numbers. I've heard that by our serial numbers we can learn what engine originally came with the truck. Is this true? If so then how would I find out?

Re: Numbers matching?!

The 60-66 Chevrolet trucks have the Serial Number on the cab and two places on the frame. The engines do not have the S/N stamped like many of the cars did. There is nothing in the S/N that tells you what engine came in it. You need paper for that- window sticker, build sheet, SPID, etc, but that is usually hard to find.

I am not as familiar with the GMCs.

You can take the "matching numbers" term as far as you want. Just body & frame or body/frame/engine/carburetor/starter/trans/axle/fan motor, seat belts, etc. etc. They all have part numbers and date codes.
