Rag Joint rebuild question

63 C-10 original manual steering.
Will this part work?
http://www.autozone.com/miscellaneou...ng/730051_0_0/
It's Dorman Help part # 31000
And according to AutoZone look up it's supposed to fit 63 and it's 3 3/16" like the old one I have. But looking at Advance Auto Parts site they say it won't fit a 63

Re: Rag Joint rebuild question

I don't know how accurate the AutoZone system is, but I've always had good luck with RockAuto.

Here's the link to their listing of the part specifically for your 63'.

https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,c...,parttype,7418

If you do go with RockAuto, always google "RockAuto Discount Code" and you'll save yourself 5%.

Conversely, you could always buy the AutoZone part and return it if it isn't the correct one...

Re: Rag Joint rebuild question

Thanks Scott. I've ordered from Rock Auto before. They usually beat everybody's prices.
But I was looking more for just the rebuild kit. My steering box shaft clamp is suffering from the "52 year crud build up and I don't want to come off" virus.
If I get the kit I can rebuild it on the truck. I've been soaking the clamp in Kroil Oil for a couple days so it may break loose if I need to go that route.

If you go to the Suspension forum and do a search on Back to the Basics,
Tx Firefighter has done an excellent article on the topic.

I did see that. But I didn't see him mention what year truck he was working on, unless I just missed it.

Re: Rag Joint rebuild question

I bought the same thing from autozone and rebuilt my 66 C10 rag joint in about thirty minutes. Worked great.

Re: Rag Joint rebuild question

There was a post on some forum that said rebuilding rag joints is a bad idea since it torques on the rubber and the bolt will loosen. Might look into an early XJ steering shaft swap to eliminate the rag joint.

That story about a retired GM Engineer saying that? I'm thinking as long as the nuts are Ny-Lock nuts it should be fine, but I'm no engineer either.

He mentions that he was doing a mid 70's with power steering.
Also mentioned that they were messed up with thier applications.
I think that if the disc size is the same you should be OK.
He said that he re-used as many of the original bolts that he could.
