Carb Replacement on 327

Since mine is a Daily driver, I'm thinking about taking off the stock 4 barrel carb on my 327 and putting on something new and more reliable.

Ill rebuild the stock carb in time, (already bought a kit) and put it on the shelf in case i ever sell the ol girl.

Never done this before so Id love suggestions on a new carb to go back with. 600-800 CFM? don't want to overdue it and guzzle gas unnecessarily, but i do want performance and power. Edelbrock, Holley, Rochester?

love some advice from the experts. thanks fellas

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

600 cfm edelbrock 4 barrel would be a great choice. Might need an adpater. Not a v8 smarty so I'm not sure. lol But I know that that is plenty of carb for a 327.

x2 on TJ's recommendation. For a good DD carb, you can't go wrong with a Edelbrock 600cfm for a sbc. Plus, Edelbrock is a very easy tune right out of the box.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

I'll throw in my 2 cents, probably a spread bore with a quadrajet is what you have. I'd stay with the quadrajet as the primaries are smaller then the Holly or the Edelbrock and you'll get better fuel economy if you can keep your foot off the floor.

Will going back with higher cfm help performance or will it be a waste? as I understand it, the higher cfm, the more air comes through the carb?

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

You didn't specify what year truck or what model carb it has now. Some of the early models had heat passages under the carb & don't match up to well with the newer carbs. I would go ahead & get an Edelbrock performer manifold & a Q-jet from the late 70s to early 80s. Or an Edelbrock carb in the 600 CFM.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

I put a new 600 cfm 1406 Edlebrock performer carb on my SB 400 20 years ago and haven't touched it since. It ran perfect straight out of the box, and still does.

Not too high. 500-600 cfm is more than enough for a 327 unless you're spinning the engine at more than 6000 rpm. Anything bigger will actually hurt performance. High performance, solid lifter 327s never had anything bigger than a 585 cfm Holley.

If the aftermarket made a 450 cfm carb, that would be even better. A 390 cfm Holley (#0-8007) would work great in a stock 250-300 HP 327, but it's way expensive

What type of carb do you have now?

Holley has a 450 cfm that I believe is cheaper then the 390...what ever happened to the 390 being the 300 dollor carb...now suddenly its almost 500 and electric choke is the only option.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

The Holley 450 cfm carb is intended to be used in dual carb applications and does not have provisions for a choke. I would go with either a Holley Street Avenger 570 or a Edelbrock 500 cfm carb. Keep in mind that the Edelbrock carbs are very sensitive to fuel pressure. A Holley 600 cfm carb will work but you may have to jet it down a little.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

I run a 500 Edelbrock on my 283. Its good but they are jetted for performance/dual quad applications, so I had to lean it out.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

I am running a Holley Street Avenger 570 on my 283 that was on there from the PO. For these style carbs I prefer the Edelbrock 500 over the Street Avenger.

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

I run a 1406 on my "327"...little bro ran it on a 305, no issues? I swapped the step up springs, to make her play nice with the LS 5.3, but other than that, no changes You could go 500 cfm, as Captn suggested & may get better part throttle response (spunky ride on the street)? Edelbrock, is a "set it & forget it " carb....nice street player. Just watch the fuel pressure (5-5.5 psi). If you want to race the truck, Holley is my favorite to tune on Longhorn

Re: Carb Replacement on 327

The edelbrock 1405 is the same cfm with just a manual choke. I am currently running it on one of my 292 inlines with no issues. $295 at summit no shipping charge.
