Voltage too high
Voltage at the battery on this original system is reading close to 17 volts. Generator light works normally. Alternator output goes to the horn relay junction and then over to the battery as it should according to wiring diagram. I've tried plugging in a spare regulator with similar results. I have a spare 10si and CS130 but prefer to figure this out before using either of them.
If the blue and whatever other (I am not at the truck right now) wire at the alternator were reversed would that put it into a full charge situation? Any other ideas? Thanks. |

Your regulator is probably not grounded. There is a small hole in the side of the base. Put a metal screw in it with a wire going to the ground wire on the alt.

Thanks Wrenchbender. The regulator had a little bit of a wire to ground which I cleaned the terminals of. There was no ground wire to the alternator grounding post so I added one and put it to the regulator ground. I think it still reads high at 16.5 volts.
Taking the cover off the original Delco regulator I see what looks like a plastic adjusting nut. Is it OK to play with that and try to get the voltage down? |

When the weather is good I'll play some more. When I tried the spare regulator I never did have it to ground. |

Well this was fun. Started off today by putting on a vise grip to hold a ground onto the spare regulator case and with the harness plugged in for a second time it then read 14.3 volts. Thanks Wrenchbender I guess they do like their ground.
As mentioned earlier the original Delco regulator was reading too high. I can't get it off without first removing the grill because the screws turn, so decided instead to try adjusting it. Got it in the range a few times but just putting the cover back on and it would drop by about a half a volt. Anyway, with the cover back on again for about the fifth or sixth time it now reads about 14.4 volts. I'll continue to monitor it and if any more problems arise the spare regulator will take its place. |
