Definition of 'OCHRE'

Since my truck is painted Ochre and White, I was wondering about the name so I looked it up.

Pronounced OH-ker

noun
1. any of various natural earths containing ferric oxide, silica, and alumina: used as yellow or red pigments

2. moderate yellow-orange to orange color

My 72 dealer brochure calls this color 'Spanish Gold'.

Just thought it was interesting.

You must like those low volume colors like red, so your truck looks like all the others.
Someday you may develop some taste and learn to like ochre like I did. It took me about 20 years to stop hating it and learn to like it.
It is a 70's color, people used to wear clothes which were this shade of mustard yellow. It goes well with stock hub caps, painted bumpers, and factory am radios.

Like we Ochre truck owners have heard many times before, "You either love it or hate it". It took awhile to grow on me. You sure don't see it much at cruise in's or car shows. It's an acquired taste like a fine sippen whiskey.

I have had my solid ochre 72 for 18 years. Not my favorite of the factory colors, but it's grows on you.

Re: Definition of 'OCHRE'

These two are not my truck but I sure do love them both and I think they look great in Oche. My original thought on Ochre was why would anyone like that color then I bought my 72 Cheyenne with Ochre/White two tone and it did grow on me fast. My future plan is to do a K20 conversion on the C10 Cheyenne complete with the "big blue dials" 8 inch steelies with stock caps and a mild lift with 33's.

Photos are courtesy of a Goggle image search and not my truck(s)

Good information Larry.

Wow, I never imagined a simple joke would touch so many nerves!
I do like red and orange on these trucks. I know LOTS of people who hate those colors, but it doesn't bother me in the least bit, when they say so.
I actually own an Ochre color blazer, and that is what I had pictured in my mind when I first saw your post, and made the joke.
When I first brought my blazer to the shop, my plan was to do an engine swap, and drive it. The more I looked at it, the more I realized that having to look at Ochre every time I drove it, wasn't going to work for me.
If my blazer had been a color that I liked, I am positive that I would have been driving it for the past several years, instead of doing a frame off restoration on it!
So to all the Ochre fans out there, please take down your nooses, and accept my apology. It was simply a joke, that I made the mistake of thinking was obvious by the LOL. It was never my intent to insult anyone!

No offense, no apologies needed. I put a smiley face on my post to show it was also all in fun.

After all, this isn't a matter of life or death. It's much more important than that.

If we all liked the same color, it would get pretty boring looking at these trucks. As they say "To each his own". No offence here either, if only I could repeat what my wife said the day she pulled in the driveway and saw my truck for the first time.

Re: Definition of 'OCHRE'

A real 67-72 guy likes every color these came in . I mostly see clay in ochre. I used to hear the same thing about Medium Olive Poly that so many love now. I have always enjoyed taking something most say they don't like and show them how good it can look. If I had a dolor for every nay-sayer who ended saying,"What color you doing it in?", I say, "Same color", then, "oh,ok", when it's done, "Hey, that came out nice", I'd at least have enough money to move ahead with my stalled '67. Not just colors and not just vehicles. It's follow the herd or show them the way in this world (not saying you). Because of how I am I figure it's fine to not like it or I'd be the nay-sayer. You can also lead the pack with not liking something everyone else seems to like. Like back when 4wds had chrome shocks, graphic paint jobs, big tires, and little axles I was one who was building to get dirty and not break. It's ok to like what you like nd not like whatever you want
I guess all dyes/pigments originated from natural elements. so, what's the definition of blue?
I first knew the name Ochre from oil paints and pastels in art class

Not a fan of this color either. I don't really like blue either but somehow I ended up with a blue C10.

Thanks for the info. It's a unique color and looks really sharp when new. Some colors don't age and fade as gracefully as others, but ochre stays pretty consistent. I love the dislike comments though, they always prompt me to look at pictures of their truck; low and behold there's usually a dozen things that make me shake my head in disbelief. There's a time and a place for those comments. Free speech doesn't mean mandatory speech.

My Dad had one similar to this one in Phoenix in the early '90s. Not nearly as nice though as it was a transplant from NY state with all the rust and trimmings from the great white north. But he got it for $100 and drove it constantly for 2 years. It was a solid Ochre C10 2 wheel drive, 307 with a 3 on the tree and cracked windshield. Had minor issues with the shifter from time to time, but when the thieves tried to steal it one night from the driveway, they couldn't figure out how to drive it.
