ad cab floor and rocker replacement process
I'm sure it's been asked before and I did do a search but didn't find exactly what I was looking for.
I need to replace both rockers, both inner cowls, both inner to outer cowl braces, both outer cowls, both front cab floor mounts, both lower front pillars (door hinge pocket area) I've got all these panels already.I also need to do both sides of the floor in front of the seat riser and sections of the toe board. Those im going to do myself from sheet metal I already have since I dont need all the access panels or emergency brake petal. I'm sure I can stumble around and burn tons of time and make some mistakes and figure out the best way to do this but im looking for some guidance from people who have done this already. It looks like you need the solid 53 cab I have that is minus it's roof.
Have you got a copy of the Assembly manual for these trucks? If not that would be the next 30 bucks I spent before I went much further. It reasonably well details out how the floor of the cab (and the whole cab) went together originally The first thing I would do though is fix the area around the lower hinge pockets and reinstall the doors and fit the door gaps and brace the daylights out of the cab so things don't move when you cut the floor and rocker areas out and replace them. I'd get one side of the truck to a somewhat all together state before attacking the other side so what is left of the original metal maintains a bit of alignment of the cab.

If I had an AD, before starting on any rust repairs I'd look through this thread. Pretty much shows what the inside of an AD cab looks like.

The one whitedog 76 posted is one of the best I have seen for showing what was done on each step.
Each cab that is that far gone is going to be a little different and require a slightly different approach. I'd think seriously about getting the cab or what's left of it sand blasted before starting the repairs so you know where the solid metal is. That might save a lot of headaches on the assembly. Even if you just had it sandlasted up through the area that you are replacing it would help a lot.

Just an option for you if you are considering a solid cab....http://www.tricktrucknrod.com/hh/Pro...?productId=309 I bought a cab from the owner, Tom, and it was solid. It was easier and faster for me to drive to Eastern Ohio to pick one up than to fix the one I had. Maybe cheaper too. |
