700r4 question
I am sure this question has been asked before but had a little trouble finding my answer. I have a 1965 c20 and want to get a 700r4 in the truck. My plan is to pull a trans out of a junk yard. Here's a few questions.
1. I want to get a non electronic 700 and was wondering what was the best year to get. I read that 91 was the best. 2.Another question is what kind of cars had the 700 in it for a junk yard pull. 3. Can someone explain a little more about the lock up converter. Or can I use the converter from my th 350. 4. One other thing I read is that the 700 really heat up a lot. I have a small tranny cooler from my 350. Will that work for it or do I need a bigger one. I have a 327 with a stock cam and maybe has about 250 horse so I will not be over powering the tranny. Or any other advice would be great. Thanks. |

Subscribed - Now that I no longer intend to pull a travel trailer with my 64 C10 I also am considering a 700R4.

90 91 MD8 cases found in 2x trucks, suburbans work great with the TCI or bowtieoverdrives.com set ups. You must use the 700r4 converter and a Hayden style plate cooler works well. I have a linear tube style ooler in one of mine that is frame mounted and it works well, but will not allow 4th gear until warmer temps are reached. Into the radiator, out to a cooler and back to the trans seems to work best as it allows the radiator to heat up the fluid too.

One of the most important parts of a 700R4 installation is making absolutely sure that the TV cable is correctly setup and adjusted. If not you will burn up the trans in a very short time. The kit made by Bowtie Overdrives is the best on the market, Also there are many, many, many threads over in the Engine and Drivetrain section all about installing the 700R4.

All the upgrades were done by 1990. If you want the best, stock, 700R4/4L60 (not 4L60E), grab one out of a 90-93 full size GM RWD car. Caprice, Roadmaster, 5.7 Cadillac.

We put a reprogramming kit and corvette style servo in my 700R4. The 1-2 shift is strong and quick. I had the tranny in my 79 4x4 for a while and built is pretty well. I also opted for the towing converter. Since the tranny is out of a 4x4 it has the thicker case. It is from a 1988 Suburban 4x4. I put a 2wd out put shaft and stuck it in my 65 behind a BBC. Why am I writing this? Hell I don't know...
