Re: rag or universal joint

Depends on your steering column hook up. If reusing a factory setup, you're likely going to use a rag joint. If aftermarket column that is spline, you'll use a u-joint setup. Either works. Rag joint take a little of the vibration out of the steering wheel but has a slightly softer feel versus a u-joint setup which is very direct.

Re: rag or universal joint

What chevy_mike says.. Will need to know how many splines are on your gear box you will have to match it up on the rag joint. Usually the universal joint depending on whats on the end of the steering column splined or OD end will fit the collapsable steering shaft. It was alot simpler and cheaper to but the whole kit from CPP. Here is a pic...

Re: rag or universal joint

Mine looks like the picture above. The rag joint and shaft is a $5.00 assembly from a 78-80 Monte Carlo. I cut off the factory u-joint at the top and installed a polished stainless Borgeson joint when I swapped to a chrome Ididit column:

when you used that collapsible steering shaft did you install it so that the shaft can still collapse or did you stabilize it in some way?

Re: rag or universal joint

I am hoping for the best of both worlds. On my build I used a vibration reducing u-joint by Borgeson along with a collapsible shaft and a regular u-joint on the other end. Now if I just had the paint finished and I could drive it...

Installed it so it can collapse. shaft goes in far and still has adjustment. It also makes it more easier to install...here is another pic..
