Gas tank trouble
How is going people. I bought a new gas tank yesterday from the charlotte auto fair for my 1971 and today I went to install it but I have seen to have ran into a bit of a problem with it if I get the neck right in the grommet the holes are off and if I get the hole lined up right the neck is off And I can't figure out why. So maybe Yall can tell me something cause I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this problem. Thanks for your time.

Re: Gas tank trouble
Can you get it in where you can start the retaining tabs and bolts maybe a couple on top and bottom then try moving the tank where you want/need it to go and then try tightening the straps down so it won't move. You should be able to get it where it is satisfying to you. Jim

Re: Gas tank trouble
It looks like the gas cap has some sort of sheetmetal collar under it, did you put that on there.

Re: Gas tank trouble
I just went out and looked at mine. It sticks out probably at far as yours. I'm going to replace the gasket on it because the one on there is crusty. I bought this truck about a year ago, it was cobbled together by the previous owner. The filler neck is JB welded on. I'm switching cab out soon so I haven't mess with the tank to see why the neck sticks out a foot.

Re: Gas tank trouble
I'm with duckworth, that neck flare doesn't look right. Check the measurements on it. I'm guessing wrong tank, maybe a loose one put in a handy box?

Re: Gas tank trouble
Are you sure the tank is all the way to the passanger side as far as it should go? looks to me like the grommet is the sane size as the larger diameter of the filler neck.
It is kinda odd, i don't think my stock tank stuck out that far before i took it out. EDIT: just found a pic, it did stick out a bit.. scroll down. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...&postcount=377

Re: Gas tank trouble
No that's the way it came. But I came up with one or two ways of fixing the problem. The first one is get the neck sitting right in the grommet and just drill new mounting holes around the tank or I could cut down the filler neck and have it tig welded back up.

Re: Gas tank trouble
Well I actually bought from a company called car and truck parts I think they are out of California but if I'm not mistaken all of there tanks are made like that. I'm thinking just drill new mounting holes would be the best and easiest fix to the problem but I don't know how far the neck is supposed to stick out

Re: Gas tank trouble
I agree and then you don't get any debris in the tank. Good luck with it.
