I normally scoff at any mileage claims -- no way to know how many times the odometer has rolled over. But I'll make an exception in this case. Nice find!!

I don't care if it had 0 miles or 1,000,000 miles on it, that's a nice panel for a good price, rust included!

Yeah, kinda hard to argue with ex fire equipment!

There's been a lot of ex fire trucks come up over the years, but not many panels. Very cool. I'd get the dent and small rust spot fixed/blended and drive it

Curiosity more than anything, but was a 307 available in '68? I thought it would have been a 327 or 283.

Re: 11,XXX mile 68 panel on craigslist

Was probably an emergency truck for a small airport. Most of them never left the property once they arrived. 11,000 miles might mean 11,000 starts and stops.

1967 model year was the last year of production for the 283, in for the 1968 and beyond it was bumped to a 307 ( and I don't how they did it bore or stroke ) but it was probably done because of emissions.

Re: 11,XXX mile 68 panel on craigslist

Same bore as the 283 and the same stroke as the 327. My understanding is the bump was needed to keep up with the demands of more power accessories along with higher speeds.
The 307 got a bad rap from a lot of folks as being weak. It's as strong as any sbc but when new only came in 2 barrel versions and this era was plagued with "soft" camshafts. The lobes wore quickly and soon a 2 barrel motor with a very low lift cam couldn't haul those barges around too swiftly.
I was given a low mile example and made a few adjustments to it (262 cam, aluminum intake/4 barrel and 1.94 heads) and it now powers my hot rod '39 pickup. Better engines than 305s with similar reputations..

Re: 11,XXX mile 68 panel on craigslist

So was it a brand new engine with no common parts to the 283?

Re: 11,XXX mile 68 panel on craigslist

Slightly unique. They feature the newer style large journal crank but the bore of the 283. The crank is the same unit used in later 327s and is cast, not forged.

I think it's just the 'burbs that had that. If I owned a panel, I'd put in a spare tire well.

Thanks man I was starting to doubt myself. I just love the wooden floors on the interiors!

I was thinking that the spare tire well could also be cool if you could put one on a fleetside, and handy if you have the rear tank. Was also thinking if you couldn't find a real one that maybe you could use an upside-down wheel well.

With a drain hole in the bottom!

It's a Standard Operating Procedure for most Fire Departments to remove the lettering when they take the truck out of service. You don't want someone to buy it up and go masquerading around as a Fire Fighter with your department lettering all over the side. It's the same for retired police cruisers. They pull off off or paint over any of the official identifying lettering.
