Re: top off yet?

Oh yeah we have a old reservoir on the property that isn't used anymore and the ground is all red clay so after this pic we made a day of the slicks that the mud created on my truck took about 3/4 of a mile before tires physically touched pavement when I went to town

Re: top off yet?

Top still off from last year as the 75 went into the shop for bodywork in December. This is will be a loooong process so the top is hanging under the carport and i keep meaning to start the work on the top.
has anyone every carried a top on a roof rack upside down? how did the airflow effect it and how did you strap it down?

I want to get it to the bodyshop so they can paint it the same color as the white on the truck. First i have to repair a small crack in the rail though.

Re: top off yet?

those tops are well top heavy. the actual top of the top weights a lot more than the bottom. I'm sure it could be moved but I would secure it good and drive it slow

Yeah, even a half-cab top I'd want to move it on a trailer you can set it down on but even more so for a full-vert top.

Re: top off yet?

Never hurts to use a little overkill when transporting one of these tops. I learned the hard way not to tow my 75 backwards with the back window down sheared 6bolts and ripped fiberglass at windshield frame it cleared the hood and and the six foot tailgate on trailer only took 45mph

Re: top off yet?

I'll be taking my soft top off today to install the hard top. I sold the Jimmy last weekend and will be delivering it to New Hampshire next week. It made it's last Carlisle show last weekend (with me as owner).

Hate to see that one go. Do you have a new project, or just thinning the herd?

Re: top off yet?

Top has been off for two weeks and loving it!

I was able to re-paint the top with a marine top coat while it's off. My Jimmy has been my no rain daily driver, and it keeps me warm even during the 40 degree mornings we've had!

Still thinning the heard. I need the money for other stuff, unfortunately. I really hate to let it go. I drove this home, put the lift/axles/tires/and soft top on before ever driving, so I only saw it with factory top and lift sitting in my driveway a couple weeks. Here it is with the top off:

I was thinking of hitting mine with some marine white, any suggestions?

Just a couple

First, you will not get the stuff off you or your clothes very easily, so be careful!

I sanded my top down quite a bit because the fibers were exposed from being sun baked. I also had to patch a few screw holes where a roof rack was affixed to the top by the old man that owned it.

The paint can says you can reduce it a bit, but I didn't. I rolled the paint on with a thin roller as suggested on the can. After it dried for a day, I re-sanded the top and painted a second coat. The top was ready to handle in 24hrs or so. This paint seems to get even more durable after drying for a few days.

Best advice- after you roll the paint on, leave it and don't try to put any extra on until you do the second coat. I had a little extra in the can and figured I would roll it on about 10 minutes after my second coat... The paint was too tacky and didn't level out. I had to re-sand it, and do a third coat.

I used Rustoleum Marine Top Coat Semi Gloss White. The paint was roughly $12/pint at Menards. I used 1.5 cans.

You can see in my picture that the roof is now brighter and more glossy than the white in the two-tone. Still looks better than before though.

Hope this can be of use
-Jeremy

Re: top off yet?

Finally decided to pull it. News said there is a slight chance or rain but it doesn't sound promising enough considering it's in the 90's. I always have carried a tarp and bungy-cords in lock box for the occasional shower when the top is off
