Paid for before even seeing it in person. When will people ever learn?

You can still buy long distance. It's all in the method of payment. If this transaction was done with PayPal for instance you would get your money back. Credit cards same.
I'll bet they paid with Western Union which has No Recourse.

I will admit I got scammed once on a $300 Tach from Georgia. Posted for $125. Smoking deal. Got nothing but a good education.
Says right on the bottom of craigslist ads to "Not use western union". Only scams.

Re: Someone got taken for a ride. Not a good one.

Well, suckers are necessary or the bad guys will go back to armed robbery.

We don't want that do we?

So suckers meet that need and we should applaud them.

I've taken a couple of risks buying firearms but each time, the seller came through.

Once I had been in contact with a seller on gunbroker but the ad closed without bids. He wouldn't relist it (gunbroker seller's fees) but agreed to let me buy it on a layaway basis. When I asked, "what guarantee do I have that you'll be honest?" he replied, "you'll just have to trust me." HE WAS HONEST. I received the firearm (have a C&R license so certain weapons ship to my door) and it's a fantastic Auto 5.

Last year, via Armslist, I made a similar deal and once again, received the weapon without problem. The seller even refunded money (sent it cash, in a Christmas card) when I had overpaid for shipping. So yes, good men are out there, but the bad men, also claim to be good men.

Best of luck to the ripped off guy here but he's going to have an enormously hard time on this one. Scammers cover their tracks very well.

Re: Someone got taken for a ride. Not a good one.

next time, just pull the money out of your wallet and set fire to it, less stress that way.

On a side note, my buddy just started his own internet business selling outdoor supplies, some guy on the east coast ordered a 3300.00 optic set up for his rifle, paid with a credit card, my buddy shipped it to him, had the customer sign for it on delivery, then the customer called his credit card company and said he never received the goods. So his credit card company reversed the charges and pulled the $3300 out of my buddie's account. He was trying to fight it, called the card company, faxed them signature proof and everything and they said that they would side with their customer and it would have to go to court in his home state. Long story short, there's people everywhere who work harder to steal your hard earned money rather than just get a fu@#$ng job.

Re: Someone got taken for a ride. Not a good one.

It's odd that this particular ad was a scam. It's very well written (for craigslist), very descriptive, and "honest" sounding about the vehicle, decent pic, and fair price.

My only guess is that it was straight up copied from a real ad and reposted as a scam.

Shame.

I guess if a crook is too lazy to get money in a honest fashion, it's plausible for them to be too lazy to create their own ad.

There's no making fun of you. Use this as a learning point for others. It too bad that you got taken. Karma will catch up to this slime ball and my only hope for you is that you'll be there when it happens. One thing you might try is reporting this to the mail service as fraud and also Craigslist administrators to hopefully track him down. Good luck
