Paint amount???
I am real close to painting my 71 SWB. I will be painting the entire truck, inside & out, top & bottom. Using base/clear. Question is how much paint to buy? I don't want to reorder because of mixing.
Thanks |

Re: Paint amount???
I would do the interior and inside the bed with a single stage, two quarts would do it. then one gallon each of the basecoat and clear coat would be sufficient for the exterior, if you choose to do the interior and inside bed with 2 stage...I would suggest one gallon and a quart for the base and clear.

Re: Paint amount???
I painted my stepside with single stage, I used one gallon of color + whatever the reducer & hardener was, and I just barely had enough for 2 coats on the entire truck for just the outside (short step side).

Re: Paint amount???
I bought 2 gallons for inside and out and sprayed two base coats ( Long bed). Now I have about 2 quarts left for touch-ups. I used about 2 quarts of clear, but I didn't clear inside of bed.

Re: Paint amount???
It's not as easy as how much paint to buy. Better paint will take less coats to cover then cheap paint. Dark colors cover faster then light colors. Single stage needs more coats then bc/cc. Different mixing ratios will give different amounts of spray able material. Etc etc. 2-3 gallons is a good starting point.

Re: Paint amount???
There is going to be a couple of factors... depending on what color you use and pai t manufacturer it could be a little slower covering but I would definitely get 2 gallons to be safe. If your just going with a basic blue black you will be fine but if it's a custom color I would go to Lowe's and buy a bucket and mix both gallons together just to make sure it's a perfect match because most automotive paint stores will only mix a gallon at a time and if some flunky adds a little more of a single color it could be a bigger deal than you would imagine espically assuming your taking it all apart and going to paint different pieces on different days.

Re: Paint amount???
Just painted my Jeep J10 with SPI pure white over grey epoxy sealer. The SPI base is a 1:1 mix with their slow reducer. I bought 1 gallon (4 quart cans) which makes 2 sprayable gallons and ended up ordering one extra quart before finishing the bed just because I was cutting it close and didn't want to run out.
Like you I also painted the inside of the cab and firewall/inner fenders. The red should cover the white sealer well, but I would still order 5 quarts. Dump 4 quarts into a clean new paint can and after you have used some add the 5th quart. SPI stuff sprays pretty nice, good choice.

Re: Paint amount???
not wanting to hijack anything, but here is another question....what does paint cost generally speaking? (ie: the paint, the clear coat, etc?)
Per quart or per gallon? Thanks! Coley

Re: Paint amount???
You can spend a lot of money on custom paint depending on a number of factors. Single stage, base/clear, metallic, manufacturer, etc. Below is a link to SPI's pricing, (who I use) you can order directly from them and they do not charge anything for shipping. Many consider their epoxy they best available for restoration work and they have a great user forum with a lot of knowledgeable members who are very helpful.
