AC ashtray paint question

I need verification of paint color on the AC ashtray bracket, does anyone know what color the mounting bracket is supposed to be.

Re: AC ashtray paint question

On mine, the formed mounting bracket looks like it was originally fawn. The bracket that the ashtray actually slides on, I had zinc plated.

Re: AC ashtray paint question

It looks to me like it was supposed to be a trim black color and that is what I plan to paint it.
I also am using the tray off a 63 or 64 Impala ac car and it used a plastic filler piece mount between the tray and the bottom of dash and it was painted the dash color same as the tray front.

The texture looks like black phosphate on the tray itself which does make sense , every GM ashtray I've seen in this time period was plated to prevent rust. Yes the center spring clip is grey phosphate . And the mounting bracket shinney black. This is consistent with my used ones although the tray gets painted dash color.

Curious if the dash was painted with the bracket in place ? Do you remember ?. Being painted like that may lead to whether the factory installed air did that or if a dealer would even bother painting the ash tray ??

Re: AC ashtray paint question

I would have to believe LT1 that your ashtray assembly was line painted laying on the floor of cab for factory install. Looks as though screws were not installed yet when 65 interior color was shot in paint line. I have one of my 3 1966 factory air trucks that appear to have been assembly line installed air. Thus the dash air balls are mounted in a factory painted dark fawn housing. This truck also has the deeper factory air x brace still riveted to the support not bolted with a spacer as kit instructions showed. The ash tray was missing on this truck so can't identify over spray but the lower dash shows no trace it was mounted when dash was line painted. Great info as I am in the same area of restoration now.

Re: AC ashtray paint question

Good point Jon as this tray may also be a dealer factory ac kit and the installer put the unfinished tray together and shot the dash color on it then installed it. Mark

Re: AC ashtray paint question

Just adding a little more information on ash tray coating and paint. This mounting bracket was painted fawn like Captainfabs and LT1s. From a 65', that was built in Tulleytown, NY ( something like that- at least in NY).
Also, the dash under side where it is mounted, is fawn painted. So not installed when painted.
This is just data, do not know how or when it was painted. Just strange some parts painted and other not. Maybe suggests that certain parts of ash tray where produced and coated separately, at different times. Assembly of ash tray may have involved multiple steps leading to an installed ash tray??

Re: AC ashtray paint question

Just checked the second AC ash tray and it is painted the same as first one above. Again this is data, what information it supports to be determined hopefully in the future.
