69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
My 69 C60 has risen from the dead. A leaky carb caused the truck to be parked for almost a year until I finally decided to clean it up and get it rebuilt back in May. With some fresh gas (that it probably didn't even need) and a restored carb it started right up and has run great for a few hundred miles. It has a leaky fuel pump now but a new one is on the way. Just slowly fixing it up. Here are some pictures and questions...
What kind of fluid/oil and filter does the air brake compressor need, and what is the procedure to servicing it? And the daily driven Shelby |

Re: 69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
Hudson-------Most air brake compressors have been plumbed right in to the engine oil system for 40 years now with a quarter inch feed line and a half inch or bigger drain down to the crankcase . But if it has no external lines, it has it's own bottom plate and should have a dipstick or level indicator of some sort . Intake breather for the compressor, if rectangular is a washable foam or sponge rubber. If it's round it has a replacable paper element available at medium/ heavy parts vendors .

Re: 69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
I believe my '62 GMC also had it plumbed. I would drains the tanks at least every Friday night and on Monday morning I would find an oily puddle under them. Although our company mechanic was the one who maintained them.

Re: 69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
Nice truck. I believe most of those style of trucks were used to move trailers and such back then. The shorter frame with the C60 ratings allowed for easy maneuverability in tight locations. That body would have been used to transport shoring stuff and supplies/tools to put the trailer in its "permanent" location.

Re: 69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
Sorry for the delayed response-no email update made me think there was no activity on the thread.
It was used by the city of Birmingham, AL to haul trailers for dental work at underprivileged schools. I'm sure it saw a few other projects as well due to the cement blocks and wood in the bed. The frog gig is just a custom trim piece that doubles as a meal catcher in emergencies… Ok not really. Thanks for info Junkman! Thanks for the complements and help guys! Much appreciated. Broke the fuel pump to carb line taking it off so in the process of fixing that now. |

Re: 69 C60 Alive Again + Air Brake Question
I assume from the hood vents that is a Big block truck ? 366 most likely? Mine is also a Big Block but has been dis assembled for going on 15 years... any chance I could get a few detail pictures of the engine compartment at some time ? I might need to jog my memory on exactly what all I am trying to find in my shed.

Yep big block 366. Sure thing just PM with what you need and I'll do what I can to help! Also have the manual.
And the compressor does use the engine's oil. Leaky return line... the hunt begins for a replacement. |
