Gas gauge

This is probably a stupid question but does the gas gauge on these later models stay at the level of gas even when shutting the truck down or does it the needle supposed to go to empty when turning off the truck

They don't normally go to empty and they may end up about anywhere on the scale when the switch is turned off.
