VIN Question

Anyone ever seen a VIN like this? 8PG1579E. I recently acquired a 1964 Chevy with that VIN and have never seen one like it. The title and truck numbers match, but the title says 1963 GMC. The cab is 64-66 Chevy, it has coil spring rear, and the e-brake is not the updated 66 style.

Re: VIN Question

No, I've never seen a VIN like that. Is the VIN tag on the cab original or possibly a VIN issued by a state for a reconstructed vehicle? Is the VIN on the frame the same?

Pictures would be a bonus.

Re: VIN Question

It's definitely not a factory VIN plate, but it is in the proper location in the door jamb. I'm not sure if it matches the frame number, though I highly doubt it does.

Re: VIN Question

Yeah, someone made that themselves. The only part of that, that makes any sense for a GMC is the P for the Pontiac plant and G for 1963. Are you going to have to have a VIN inspection on this truck to be able to transfer the title and license it?

Re: VIN Question

Luckily, no. It had a Utah title and the numbers matched. I registered it last week and didn't ask questions at the DMV.

Re: VIN Question

I don't know if I would spend a ton of money on something like that. Looks like a home made tag even. That would be a tough sell down the road and would scare people away.

What I would do is get the VIN on the frame and see what I could find out about that VIN and possibly a title for the frame. Then if you were to sell the truck, you would have the title for the frame.. IMO it would be better to have a title for the frame, and no tag at all on the cab..

The other option would be to contact your local state police motor vehicle investigator and see what they say about issuing you a reconstructed vehicle title. But be careful going that route as it could backfire on you.

Re: VIN Question

As it is now, the truck is titled and registered to me. The DMV didn't ask any questions as it was already a Utah title. I don't plan on putting much money into it as it's just a beater/parts hauler.
