Re-directing the steering column ???

Has anybody actually changed the direction or angle of attack on the 55-59 steering column from its stock location ? ....

Mine is a late style Camaro front clip with the steering box ahead of the K member ???? results? drawbacks? issues?

Mine has the SAG 800 power steering box and its mounted on the inside of the frame rail. I would like the steering column to come out higher out of the firewall to get the shaft away from the header area. I havenet taken any measurement or angle yet but wondered if anybody else has done this at all?

Thanks

Re: Re-directing the steering column ???

here's mine. Notice the stock mast jacket is as high as possible in the stock hole on the firewall. It's also bolted up to the stock mount under the dash inside the cab. The u-joint steering shaft is a stock part from an early Toronado, easier to find a hot rod part now. It uses the stock rag joint at the box, which is a 12:1 Sag from a 79 T/A pace car. there's inches between the shaft and the header, and no other inference anywhere. Setup has been trouble free since installed in '93.

Re: Re-directing the steering column ???

I have the same deal you have and have a big block. I moved the steering up some, but don't remember how much, and over to the left about 1" to make the steering work. it's not centered on the dash exactly but it's really difficult to tell unless you look. I basically took the double D shaft from the box and put it up to where it had to go to clear the headers and firewall setback, drilled the hole and made the rest work. Doesn't look much different than anything else I've seen and it drives great. Sometimes we complicate things that don't have to be, IMO. I do have a tilt wheel.

Ideally a U joint under the dash to leave the upper part of the column in place and get the angle you need to come out the firewall higher would work best. A lot of mini van columns have that type of setup but their columns are ugly as all get out.

Why yes, there was supposed to be a pic. Not sure at all what happened to it. May have been picked off by a passing cosmic ray.

Re: Re-directing the steering column ???

Thanks T Mob and Speed bump, gives me some good ideas how to work mine into place. I think Im just gonna have to play with till I get it to my satisfaction. I am going with over the frame headers so its going to be a challenge on that side.

Speedbump - your interior is very nice! what seat is that setup out of?

Thanks again

Re: Re-directing the steering column ???

Seats are 99 Silverado. Very easy to modify mounts to fit stock holes. Have pics of that if you choose that option. Console is a Ford Aerostar mini van. It's almost completely flat on the bottom and actually fits between the seats.

Re: Re-directing the steering column ???

I enlarged the already large steering hole upwards to the floor crease where it turns into a firewall.
I think I raised it up 2 inches, then made an aluminum plate to fill the hole instead of the factory rubber covered tin plate.
I Used black sealant to adhere it to the cab, and taped in place. When the sealant dried, I drilled 4 holes in the floor and plate and used 10/32 screws and small aircraft style "hatnuts". tightening the screws till snug gives some elasticity to the sealant "gasket". Then I painted the area black.
You have to strain to see it.
I used a 30 inch column, about 3 inches stick out from the cab, and the steering box is down, right behind the radiator about 3/4 of an inch.
that makes my steering shaft almost straight with a universal at each end and no steep angles, and it is 18 inches long.
more steering column sticks out from the cab since I am using the original wheel, and it is dished about 4 inches, as you know.
I am using G body suspension pieces.
Go to projcts and builds for the 47-59 forum, my thread is "my 57 revitalized".
I think there are some vague pics in there that show the steering column and shaft.
my link is broken, so don't rely on that .
Exhaust is from an 89 corvette with the shrouds removed and tubes welded shut.
