What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Yesterday I drove into PA for a cowl. I got in about 50 minutes ago. So far, that's the farthest I have driven for a part, some 300 miles one way.
What about you? Last edited by In The Ten Ring; 09-28-2015 at 03:50 PM. |

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
600 miles round trip to St George, Utah for my SWB rolling chassis
600 miles round trip to Atwater, Ca (C/10 Kings Ranch ) for my SWB bed Did each trip separately in one day, still came out way ahead time and money wise starting with excellent condition parts.

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
I once drove from North Idaho to seattle and back in a day for a truck with buddy buckets. Bought the truck for $800, drove it 300+ miles back to idaho, took the seats out, put a bench in, and sold the truck for $800. I must have really wanted those buddy buckets!

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
^^^^ Heh heh, I hear those old GM truck guys are crazy like that. The first tilt column I ever saw was in a truck on a used car lot. Got the truck for $600, swapped the column, and sold it for 600 to a guy who worked for me and needed transportation. He never missed what he never knew about. That was a good truck.
HAH! Same question in my mind. So far, just parts and not whole vehicle, I guess 1,100-1,200 miles one way (Pensacola,FL) for a rolling chassis (bring your own wheels). On that trip I picked up a 71/72 GMC grille in Atlanta going down. I went 750 or so (Killen,AL) to get a cab in July. I got another cab in Rose Hill,VA about 500 miles down the road. I did a trip where I went up to north central MA for an HO52 w/No-Spin, then came to southern NJ for a '68 327/TH400 and buddy buckets. I'd have to figure out how far that was. The best parts run was when I didn't leave my house and got a set of 37/12.50-16.5 Super Swampers from VT, a louvered 67/68 hood from NH, '71 K/10 SWB from NJ, radio delete cowl cover from NJ (different guy from '71/same guy as 327,etc), and my buddy (Chevy Fatman? Paul) got a full set of '68 Suburban seats incl. buddy buckets from the same guy I got the truck from (6T727T2). I bought the tires from VT Blazer in VT. He went to NH and NJ on the way down and jc in NJ brought the cowl cover down, along with his daughter Cheyenne. It all just fell into place and we had a great little truck site cook-out... including running into town for cruise night at Jimmy Cone. Panhandler and his wife came over from WV, too, so it was a nice little group.

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
My wife and I went about 1600 miles to west Texas[ Big Springs] To pick up a 03 4X4 long bed frame. It was the closest I could find at the time. We played golf at their muni with the frame on our car hauler trailer.

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Roughly 400 miles back and forth up north twice from the south bay in one day. I didn't want him to sell the truck to someone else! My dad and I were pretty pooped the next workday.
I purchased my car at about 1am in the morning... Cash... |

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Hooked up the trailer and went 500 miles for a parts truck with good sheet metal and other parts I needed. It had a front clip and doors that easily exceeded the price of the truck. Plus I met another guy in the same area to pick up some more sheet metal. Both were good guys here on the parts board and I was able to work it all into the same trip to save gas. I enjoyed the trip as well. Theres just something about that feeling you get looking in the rearview when you're bringing one home.

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
850 miles RT to Atlanta for a grill and bumper. We were up that way on vacation, and I scheduled a little side trip. My wife and son thought I was nuts. They still do.

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Driving my '72 back east I stopped at a hubcap place off of I-70 in Ohio and found a nice rear hubcap to replace a dented one. That is a good day's drive from from here, but I was coming from the other direction so it took several days, and then a day's drive

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Boy, I'd have to have most of the parts you guys went for shipped. I never did like long haul trips even for vacations. maybe 100 miles for me if it was something I realy wanted, hats off to you travelers..

Re: What is the farthest you have driven for a part?
Huh. I'm a lightweight compared to you guys (I wouldn't have guessed that).
I'd have to say round trip to Dayton and back (500 miles total) for the correct snow blade for my tractor. That's the longest trip that comes to mind. Naturally I couldn't get the blade when I was down there two weeks prior picking up the tractor. I had to make the trip twice. K
