64 deluxe heater

does the motor have to be running for the heater to work?

Re: 64 deluxe heater

Do you mean the blower motor for the fan or the truck engine? In order to get heat, yes the truck has to be running, it pumps coolant through the heater core and the fan blows air across that, thus heat. The blower motor (fan) should run with just the key on.

Re: 64 deluxe heater

my problem is i have power all the way through to the blower motor, tested the control switch it is new,the resistor, also new,and have run a wire from the battery straight to the blower motor, that worked.then when i put it all together and flip the switch i get nothing.took the wire off the blower motor terminal and tested it with a test light and its getting power but the blower wont go unless i rum a wire straight to the batt then it works fine.

Re: 64 deluxe heater

also i was wondering if the blower runs with the engine off wont that fry the resistor since it uses fresh air to keep it cool?

Re: 64 deluxe heater

You may try a volt meter and see how many volts you are getting at the blower motor with the switch on. I would also check the ground, but I imagine the motor is grounded through the body and if a wire from the B+ made it spin I would think you have a ground. As for the resistor I have never heard before that it needs to be cooled but if the fan is running it is getting air across it. The only thing the engine running does is provide heat to the core to make warm air.

Re: 64 deluxe heater

i ended up grounding directly from the batt to the blower and i've even switched out the heater wiring harness, starting to pull my hair out.question if i take the resistor and hook it up to the pos on the batt it should heat up right?because in all my testing even with power to the orange blower wire it hasn't heated up at all.power is going through it but it wont get hot, that seems fishy to me.

Re: 64 deluxe heater

take fan motor out !is probably stuck in housing ? leaves /dead mice etc. ? ill bet the motor is bad ? any parts store or junk yard should have one! sometimes later models will fit ?with a newer style fan on it = more air velocity ?? good luck

Re: 64 deluxe heater

I went through this a while back, I had took my heater box out to paint the firewall and paint the heater box, it worked fine until that, when I put everything back no worky, worky, I could run a wire straight to the heater and battery and it would run checked the switch and no power,, Guess what it turned out to be the fuse.. I had torn the heater half way apart and was ready to pull my hair out to...FUSE,FUSE,FUSE,FUSE,FUSE.

Re: 64 deluxe heater

Maybe the two have a short between them. I had a lot of fusebox issues and ended up replacing all my interior harness.
