I am not a wrench, in fact, I had to use spell check to even spell wrench. I have found a SBC 350, it is complete with 77K original miles on it. Out of a 1980 blazer. I can buy it for $300. My question is...is this a fair price, too high or a steal? I can not hear it run as it is on a stand for sale. To me it looks like a motor, like I said, I can barely put gas in the crazy things to make 'em go. The owners says it was running strong and no smoke when he took it out. At some point I want to swap my L6 for a SBC.
Any ideas? Thanks!!!

You will want to check if it has a four bolt main. You can get the numbers of the block to tell if it is or not. As far as 1980 350 I really don't know what heads and internal stuff they used that year. I would look around you can often find 350s cheaper.

with it being on a stand you are ALMOST at his mercy. You could run a compression test and make sure it is all good. You could also hook an oil gauge to it and spin the oil pump with a drill and check oil pressure. Pull a valve cover and look and see how well and often the oil was changed,ie no sluge. Or you could just take him for his word and hope that it doesn't have a Sherwin Williams rebuild on it. Will he back up his claim will a warranty if it is indeed bad, smokes? Also look on the back of the block behind the intake on the flange where the tranny would bolt up, drivers side. If it says "hencho de mexico" I would pass, as these blocks have a low nickel content and in my experiece CRACK if they even get a little hot. Good Luck

Thanks John. Great stuff. I am considering taking a class at our local Vocational-Technical school in auto body and another in auto mechanics. In both classes, you buy the material and they provider the tools, shop and instruction on how to do the work. Sounds like a good deal to me. Now if I can just find an old tired 350.
![]() Thanks again!
