Some interesting facts about our trucks

These are facts from a article I read in a magazine called '67-72 Chevy Trucks(spring 99).

*In 1967 only 3% 1/2 to 2 ton trucks had factory a/c.
*In 1971 33% had factory a/c.
*In 1967 12% had the large rear window.
*In 1968 19% had the large rear window.
*In 1969 the large rear window was standard.
*In 1969 the 396 was offered in the truck line.
*In 1971 there were under 10,000 Cheyenne Super packages.
*In 1972 there were over 40,000 Cheyenne Super packages.
*From 1967-1972 2% of trucks each year had factory tachs.
*In 1969 the Blazer was introduced(we knew that).
*In 1969 94% of Blazers had white fiberglass roofs, 6% black.
*In 1971 78% of Blazers had black fiberglass roofs, 22% white.
*In 1972 77% of Blazers had white fiberglass roofs, 23% black.
*In 1969 less than 1000 2wd Blazers were made.

Im sure some may disagree with these numbers but they are from a well written article.

I see a problem there......the small back window was not offered in 1968. 100% of '68 trucks had the big back window.

I thought the big window was an option in 68 and not available in 67.

I guess that means the rest of these numbers could be "off", but it was a interesting article that also got into engine options, trim levels etc.

I see 3 lines that are not acurate, or at least misleading.
Quote:
*In 1968 19% had the large rear window.
*In 1969 the large rear window was standard.
*In 1969 the 396 was offered in the truck line.
#1 In 68, 100% of the truck had the big back window, the small window was a 67 only deal.
#2 In 69, the large window was indeed standard, as it was in 68.
#3 The 68 was the first year for the 396, not 69 as this implies

Does that article say anything about the longhorn starting in 69? That is another common misconception.

In 1970 "Chevrolet introduced the Longhorn package, which was a fitting promotional name for a truck designed especilly for king-sized camper bodies. It was availible in both 3/4 and one-ton versions, with a immense eight-and -a -half -foot long bed on a 133 inch wheelbase".

I have also read that Longhorns were first made in '70 and i read in a book that they were discontinuted in '71.....but Longhrorns came out it '68 and lasted until '72.

I have heard about the early '68 small back window trucks, but i have never seen one........so i dunno if that is true or not.

March 11th of 68 was the first Longhorn, and they did in fact last untill the end of the 72 model run.

I am not saying this is totally wrong, but how come I have never seen a black blazer roof that I can remember?

I was under the impression that there were no 2wd 1969 Blazers made, perhaps someone can help.

1969 GMC, good catch. You are right, the 2 wheel drive Blazer didn't exist untill 1970, and then there were 985 built. In 69, there were only 4935 built, and every one of them was a 4X4.
The deal about the white verses black seems fishy, but I don't pay enough attention to the Blazers to say anything.
I can remember one on here that had a black top though,...it was a red K/5 with some good meat on it. Haven't seen pics of it for about a year. The member repainted it, I remember the pics were in his driveway in a fairly new nicer subdivision. (so it apeared)
Blue, you 100% positive that this small window 68 was original? I've heard a few ppl on here swear up and down that they have seen one, but I have never seen proof. (don't want to say all y'all are full of gear lube, just kinda hard to swallow)

Yeah, that's what I do when ppl insist there 3 door burb is rare, or the guy who used to have the stock 454 powered 1972 SS C/10...all stock.
Other people's children...I'm tellin you.
It's one thing when it is one person's word against the other's...but when you are showing them dated material straight from GM...and the guy still says that all the burb were 4 doors, you just want to punch him in the friggen nose. (maybe I should lay off the caffeine?)

Over the last 13 years that I have messed with these trucks, I have seen a handfull, maybe 8 or so, trucks that have had a small back window and side markers. Most of these were junkers at the side of someone's house or in a field. I remember while Hunting for trucks/parts with my dad we would always try to see who could guess the correct year first. When we would see a small back window we would automaticly say 67. On a few occasions, maybe 8 or so, someone would say oh look it has side markers, it must be a 68.

Moral of the story. Either at least 8 idiots took the time to switch the cabs on some complete bombs or some 67's had side markers, or at least some of the early 68's had small back windows.

Did any 67's have side markers originally?

A LOT of years ago, I bought a '68 at an auction of a junkyard going OOB. It had the PS set-up I needed for my '67, some door parts, and various other stuff. The tile and VIN matched; both said '68. The truck was a hulk--no driveline--and there was NO evidence of repainting or even repairing .

It had a small back window.

I have never seen another.

I don't know why anyone would think there are not any 68 small back windows out there. I have never seen one, but I would bet money they exist. GM is notorious for useing "leftover"parts. A lot of early 67's have 66' armrests. In 54 they changed the VINs on all the leftover 53 corvettes and made them into 54s...lol. The only reason the 402 big block exists is because GM had a ton of 396 blocks that were defective and bored them out at the factory...in camaros and chevelles they were still called 396s. All the big three did this...F@rd did it with the 390, made a 406 for a couple of years. But Mopar takes the cake...they bored out 383s just on the cylinders that were bad...so they had different sized pistons in the same block. The point of all this rambling is, it was standard practice to use leftover stuff. I would be willing to bet on a board this size we could find other examples....like 69s with handbrakes...72s with cab mounted mirrors...they are out there people

Based on those figures, how rare is a '68 six cylinder with factory A/C??

Would be kinda nice if pehaps we could have a Facts page here with the production numbers, info about small things like (2wd blazer started in 70, tilt columns started in 69, etc....)
I love reading about this kind of stuff, like only blah blah % had A/C, or 67 1/2 trucks had 292, 283, or 327 engines...
We all have our own knowledge and if we put this all in one place, I think it would be an awesome reference guide (more valuable for the purist) Other things that I would like to see would be all the codes for all the options.

I PARTED A 72 CHEVY K5 BLAZER WITH A BLACK TOP THAT CAME FROM THE FACTORY. YES IT WAS ON THE OPTION SHEET IN THE GLOVEBOX. ON THE OTHER STUFF, LIKE TOM HAND SAID I have never seen one, but I would bet money they exist. GM is notorious for useing "leftover"parts.
