Dana 44 drum to disc
I have searched, but havent seen what I am looking for.
I bought a 68' shortbox 4x4 that has a 70' open knuckle drum front end. The drivetrain has been completely gone through on it and it has new everything on it. I have a 75' 1/2ton front end that has discs on it. I would like to swap them. Can I re-use the knuckles from the drum setup? The reason I would like to is because I would rather not mess with the balljoints as they are new and the ones on the 75' front end look like they have had better days.

ive never tried this myself, so i am just remebering things i have read. i think there is a difference in certain knuckles. there is a chance that the knuckles are the same and that you just need to swap everything from the knuckle out. i do believe the stub axles spindles and seals are different on the later axle. just not sure on the knuckle.

Check where the tie rods attach. There are undermount and overmount. You may have to change them too.
The tubes and axles are bigger on your newer unit also. If you do swap out the whole axle, you will need different u bolts and anchor plates. |

To answer your question, yes you can use the knuckles from the drum brake front end. Use the spindles, caliper mounts, hubs/rotors from the newer front end. You will also have to use the newer axles, both inner and outer, from the newer front end. The reason is, the seal that is on the back side of the spindle is different. When you take it apart, you will see the difference in the seals.
As far as swapping out the whole axle, the tube diameters are the same. In mid '77, they switched to a corporate 10 bolt front end and that's when the tube diameters got bigger. As far as how the tie rods attach, that doesn't matter, you don't want to swap the knuckles anyways. Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions, just ask. |

My 70 K10 Dana 44 drum brake tubes were 2.75". The donor 1975 Dana44 disc has 3" tubes.

All the Dana 44's I've seen had the 2.75" tubes. Must have been some different variations. You just never know what's out there.

The drum brake 44 that is in there has 3.73 gears. My donor is 4.10 gears is why I dont just swap out the whole axle.
So I need to swap front axle shafts, and everything from the spindle out?

Another question, I got them pulled apart and the backing plates/spindles installed and a buddy is turning my rotors for me. The drum setup had a set of brass warn hubs on it, I have another set of warns for the disc setup that have the plastic dials. Are they the same hubs? the internals appear to be different and came apart differently.
Would it be worth posting up the old brake backing plates/pads and drums? These were completely gone through with 0 miles on them.

The plastic warns are the ones I have, they will work fine in your hubs, but they are different internals than the brass ones, and I don't believe they can be mixed.
I didn't try to sell my drum setup but posting is easy, and you never know what someone is looking for. Good luck...Rick |
