Was the heater box painted or just left plastic grey?
Was the heater box ever painted from the factory?

I have seen them wet sanded and satin clear coated makes them look like brand new plastic

Re: Was the heater box painted or just left plastic grey?
Here are a couple shots of my A/C box. I applied Armorall just after it hit the market (that'll date me) and a couple times since. So, this is pretty close to what it looked like new. I don't know if the heater boxes were made of the same material. As suggested above, wet sanding should work well, but I'd take it slow and easy.
