72 chev 4x4
My dad and I drove past a 72 sitting for sale along the road this past weekend on the way to camp. Figured I would try stopping by it on the way home to get a closer look. I am a sucker for the 67-72s, so I already wanted it on first look. I only got 2 pics and hard to see much from either to be honest, but I figured I would ask anyway just so I don't lose my shirt like I have done too many times in the past.
Called the small dealer who has it sitting out front to ask questions. He claims it has a 283 with a th350 or something like that. He then gave me the spiel that he got it from a guy who had it 20+ years and such and such. What I could tell is the frame looks like it was stripped down, media blasted, and painted. Can see some body work was done in rockers and cab corners. Paint isn't anything to write home about. Wiring was noticeably butchered up pretty good. Dealer says they have it listed for $5,600. I am looking for a driver and not a show ride. Do you guys think it is worth this much? What is a good number to try and send his way when I go and take a look again at it |

Re: 72 chev 4x4
Got back in touch with the place who has it. I wanted to get a VIN from them to see what this thing is/was originally, since it has C/10 emblems on the fenders. That and I forgot to jot it down when I looked at it.
He gave me this vin: CE1421xxxxxx and I used the handy decoder off the main home menu that I saw on accident to come up with the below- C=4x2 E=v8 1=1/2 ton 4=Truck 2=1972 1=Oshawa Plant Based on this, someone hacked in the 4x4 gear at some past time on this truck. This seems to fit right in with all the hacked up wiring that I could see everywhere on it. |

Or the original cab was swapped out with a 2wd cab. Swap or not I still think it is priced well compared to what some of these trucks are going for.

Re: 72 chev 4x4
Body swaps are not uncommon. It won't have the value of an original, but you can have a 67-72 4wd that way for less (should be) money. It's a good way to create a 4wd that does not make any compromises in quality. It can be done just as well as factory. My first concern on a PA 4wd would be a rusty frame. I wouldn't expect much on the body, that's a given, but you have to have a usable frame. Sounds like that's the best part on this one. It's a running driving cool 4wd for $5k. I don't think that's bad, if that's all you want

Re: 72 chev 4x4
looking at 4x4's for the past 2 yrs that one looks like a great deal.
like k said good 4x4 frames are hard too come by here in pa. most were eaten by the road salt. i dont think you could build that truck for that price. wiring isnt a big deal it can be replaced or fixed. beside the wiring in these trucks is about as simple as they come.

Re: 72 chev 4x4
rwolf9653, I honestly didn't even think about the cab swap idea for whatever reason. Maybe this cab/vin combination was a rust free southern truck or something. I don't question it at all, just didn't come across the brain until you said it.
Thanks everyone for all the info and price thoughts. My plan is to try to go look real close at it and possibly make the buy on Saturday. Depending on how that plays out, I will make up a new post with some pictures on the 67-72 page if I do get it. |

Re: 72 chev 4x4
Went and looked at it today. It had a lot of bondo pretty much everywhere on it. Many unknown things about it sort of caused me to be a bit leery as well. No clue what frame, running gear, or anything was used. Cab is the only thing I can sort of know what it should have been off of because of the vin.
Figured I might as well toss out a number just to see what would happen (likely because I am crazy), but I wasn't close enough to the price they were wanting for it, so I figured it was best to part ways. Only negative is I now have the itch to get one of these things. Been scanning the truck listing, but not really seeing anything in my range. Might go over to the wanted to buy board and throw up a post. Thanks again all you guys for giving me guidance and insight on what this one could be worth. |

Re: 72 chev 4x4
I think you made the right choice. What you described initially, even with the possible frame swap, sounded like a good price. The questionable body work is an automatic pass.

Re: 72 chev 4x4
I'd put the money you'd spend on that truck into a unmolested western factory K model truck. the C model serial number, lift kit, big tires, ford style mirrors and sun visor are all deal breakers for me.

Re: 70 chev 4x4
Came across another manual trans 4x4. Not sure what to say about this one, but I figured at least you got some pictures that are always fun to check out. Vin tells me things were changed in the history like the other one, cs140b: 2x4, 6cyl, 1/2 ton, 1970, Baltimore.
Showing 3/4 ton axles on this one is a difference. Picture round one. |

Re: 70 chev 4x4
Last 2 I got. Can't tell if it is surface rust going on under there, or if it could be deeper than that. Not located near this one, so I can't poke around at it very easy.
