scratching my head over engine numbers

hello I bought a 1955 1st series just over a month ago.it had been rodded in the early 90s. was told the donor car was a 79 monte carlo. front frame clip motor/trans and rear end. it runs drives around the block after a 20 year nap. but I'm trying to figure what engine it has. my son (much younger eyes) read me the numbers I wrote them down but couldn't match anything.
tonight I pulled the alternator back to get a good view and still makes no sense the stampings are on 2 lines as follows

I can't find anything even close .it's a chevy? v8 and 3 speed auto 2bl carb

look on the back of the engine below the left valve cover where the trans bolts to the engine. That casting number will tell you

Yep... the codes are available on several sites. The first number has some engine specific information: Engine assembly plant (V=Flint, MI), Assembly date (1210 = Dec 10) and the engine identifier (CPY = 1977 vintage 145 hp 2bbl equipped 305 used in F, A, and X body platforms). The second number can be decoded to tell you the carline (1=Chevy), the last digit of the production year (7=1977), the car's assembly plant (N= Norwood, OH) and the last six digits of the original VIN (525736).

thanks guys you make it sound easy. I tried several vin decoders but they always said that one identifier was wrong
