What's this here fire wall insulator?

It's this itches like heck/wear a nuisance mask fiberglass insulation, which sits above the heater box against the firewall.

What's the common label for this?

Any recommended substitutions?

Recommended glue?

Thank you...............

Surprisingly enough it isn't fiberglass, and it shouldn't itch at all. It is a cotton batting that is glued to the firewall with a spray on contact cement....

The reason it looks so crappy is because it is a recycled or reclaimed cotton product.(and dirty) You should be able to get something like it at an upholstery shop....

Thanks Doc. I'm allergic to dust / wood particles, etc.

Spray-on contact cement.........perfect. I take it flammable materials are not a consideration

I think the common name for that type of material is "Jute". Had to put the "jute mat" or "jute pad" under the rear package tray (below rear window) in my GTO, and it's also attached under the carpet of the same car. Always heard it called "jute". Not sure if that's what it's called for the firewall though.

Jute is something different. Cotton batting is used for insulation or stuffing. Jute is used for backing carpet or other places where a strong fiber is needed.

Huh, didn't know that (obviously, right?). Looks the same to me.

They also used to make a jute carpet padding for commercial applications I used a lot of it in a church once when we replaced the carpet. I don't know if they still make it for that application or not. I don't see any reason a thick jute couldn't be used for the firewall padding.

That's what I was thinking. It might be easier to work with. But check this out. Looks like a great option. http://www.homedepot.com/p/UltraTouc...6482/202709974

That looks perfect, unless it's too thick for where you need it.

The roll is wide enough, but may be twice as thick. Doesn't mean it doesn't work, may just need to trim near the two plugs for the receptacles fastened to the heater box, which I don't know the names of yet.

That looks like it would work great! A little extra thickness wouldn't hurt a thing....

Re: What's this here fire wall insulator?

LMC sells firewall insulation pads http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=51
not sure which that one is, looks like it might be the batting behind the center retainer(?) Anyway, just wanted to share, not positive it's the same thing, but I think it is.

What the OP is looking for is actually above those, up behind the glove box liner.
