I picked up a new vent window assembly for my 79. There is no glass in it. How do I go about removing the glass from my old assembly to put in the new one?

I just finished refurbing my vent windows and installing them in the truck. This was the only part I had trouble with and ended up taking them to a glass shop. I got the glass out easy enough after a bunch of cutting with a utility razor. I bought new rubber strips, lined them up with the frame, and used a dead blow hammer to seat them. You may have better luck than I did, but I had a small gap on one side at the bottom. It wasn't anything you could see daylight through, but after all the work I didn't want to risk them whistling at me going down the road. So I ended up dropping them off. FWIW, they didn't use the rubber strips, he had an epoxy they use. They turned out good.

I had Precision do mine. I had heard that was the hardest part. So I left it up to the professionals.

You mind posting some pics of the vents they did for you? I would like to referb the vents on my truck but was also stumped on how to remove the glass. Does precision handle the painting of the frames too? Thanks!

I will as soon as I get them back from having them tinted. They look brand new after Precision gets done with them. They restore & paint the bar, new seals and everything.

Sweet..thanks! Yea mine have the two piece seals so I was debating on tackling it or buying the Gm vents with clear glass(the only ones my local dealer can still get) and swapping my original tinted glass. Shoot me those pics when you get them back...sounds like sending them to precision maybe the way to go.

Looks good! You can tint those at home pretty easy. There's one pin to drive out of the vent lock and then one screw to remove and then you're down to the glass. With the handle out of the way it's pretty easy. Here's the exploded view.

I hate it when they do that. In that pic you can see the pin that needs to be driven out. Once it's out, the handle, the lock button, and the spring for the lock button will come free. Once they're off, you'll see the screw head that holds the two halves together. Use a sharpie and mark 12'o'clock on the inner half above the screw head. The inner half has to be oriented like that for the vent lock to work. It doesn't have to be perfect, up is up. But once you remove the screw, the inner and outer halves will come free with the gasket and plastic spacer. If you take it off for the tint guys it'll make it much easier for them and you won't get the cut-around job.

I need new seals and latches on two trucks and would like to figure my budget.

There are at least a couple videos on YouTube that show you how to disassemble and reassemble with new rubber vent seals.
