Need some steering wheel ideas.
Replaced the stock steering wheel from my 72 with the cheapest Grant. LIke the smaller size, but not much else. Don't really like late model Chevy wheels or anything too blingy. I'd be happiest with factory look and around 14", but that ain't happening.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
I like this Grant (not mine). There are others similarly styled. I just like the clean classic appearance of 3-spoke wheels.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
You can cut a factory wheel down. There's some welding and bodywork involved.

The "Unknown" Steering wheel is the 69-70 3 spoke sport cushion steering wheel found in Camaros, Novas, Chevelles. I put one in my 65 Chevelle SS. You can find more at www.muscle-factory.com

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
I just ordered one from forever sharp steering wheels. I'm using a silver carbon fiber wrap on interior that originally had wood grain along with the lower trim and went with the hydro dipped outer and bowtie horn. Should be here in a day or two to give more feedback, but looked like one that Kindig-It used on one of his builds. Mike

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
Thanks for the options guys. I pulled out the old steering wheel from the corner of the barn. I'd forgotten how bad it was. It was a 2 spoke and the middle part is cracked pretty bad. It actually looks a lot like the 73-8x type steering wheel with a different center horn button, plus it's green.
Thinking a square body steering wheel might look pretty good, but probably have to be black. |

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
You might consider these - I posted them in the For Sale section about 4 weeks ago. I like that they are factory Chevrolet truck wheels and look factory - just slightly updated. To my taste they blend in well. The three spoke is 14" and the single bar is 15" - both much smaller than stock. The single bar gives easy full guage/dash visibility and the three spoke looks like an updated traditional. Both say Chevrolet. NOTE - looks are deceiving - the facatory three spoke on the right is the same diameter (14") as the Grant (sold)on the left.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
I've got a 4 spoke from an early 90s truck in my 3100 and really like it. They look good in the 67-72s as well.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
The sport wheel out of the late 80's early 90's Silverado truck was also in the S-10 and blazers and Astro vans as well. Those are less likely to be picked over in a junk[salvage] yard. Any GM wheel up to [and including but they look kinda silly]the air bag wheels will work on your truck. Just so you will know while looking. There are some pics of the Caviler sport wheel in some of the members trucks that look like the best thing [maybe] out of that car.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
Think I found what I like. Excuse the mess, just put a motor in this thing and in the process of hooking up some gauges and a little wiring. Also, got my heater blower motor working better after cleaning out what I assume is a mouse nest of insulation.
Original is toasted green one broken all to pieces. Used a cheap grant for a couple of years. Tried a early 90's Chevy wheel this week, didn't like it. T Today, scored this minty square body steering wheel a buddy of mine had hanging on his wall. Can see dash much better and it's not as big as the original, but doesn't feel like a toy Grant. Just needs a little cleaning. Horn works too. Now got to clean up under the hood and I'll be in ready for spring. |

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
it must be just me, I really like the org. steering wheels they have class, to me there is nothing worst than a nice restore or org. truck with one of those small steering wheels or a later model wheel on it. just ruins the whole truck.no class at all. again i know alot will disagree with me but that is my opinion.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
I have this. It's a forever sharp wheel with the A01 adapter kit so I can actually use the horn if needed. They have a very large selection so you might find a wheel to your own liking.

Any idea if other Chevrolets, such as Camaro, have the same spline and horn hook-up? Who would know the interchange part capability?

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
The old wheels were big for manual steering trucks to give more leverage. Or that's my theory...
The 4 spoke 2nd gen Camaro wheels aren't bad, but I wrapped mine in leather. Looks good. I have one in the Camaro. I have a 4 spoke truck wheel in the truck now. There's a pic above where the poster says he doesn't like it. I have a stock 69-72 wheel in great shape I'll try at some point. |

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
Been off for a while. This is my truck (in the earlier posts) Pretty pure it's a Grant wheel. I've had it for maybe10+ years. Do really like the feel and size. Not sure if they still make it anymore or not. If you can find one would definitely recommend it.

Re: Need some steering wheel ideas.
Here's the steering wheel on my 71 C10. I like it because it doesn't look like an aftermarket wheel and it doesn't have much dish. It from an 85-88 Monte Carlo SS and has an earlier Camaro horn cap (it's not a big as the SS).
