84 305 No start
1984 c10 swb 305/th350
Yesterday, I installed a new fuel pump, new fuel hoses, gas, fuel filter and arc seal in the distributor cap. still no start it spins over but no start up. Does the way the rotor is pointed have anything to do with it not starting up? Distributor cap has very little carbon on prongs and no cracks. I would like to know before I shell out $35 for a new cap and rotor and that isn't the issue. Also, what is the gap on the plugs for an 84 305? I followed this photo for the firing order. Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Did it run before you did your tune up? Had similar problem with mine. Turns out the timing chain jumped a cog. I can tell you how to check this if you like?

Remove front spark plug on drivers side. slowly turn engine with socket on front of crankshaft. Put your thumb on spark plug hole while turning engine until you feel compression pushing past your thumb. (Compression stroke) . Insert small screwdriver into cylinder, and continue turning slowly until screwdriver quits coming up. (top dead center). Remove Dist cap. Your rotor should be pointing exactly at #1 pole on cap. If its not, you may have a timing chain problem

No, hasn't ran in a good while, but started and killed immediately a few months ago, but it wasn't getting any fuel. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Did you install the fuel pump correctly? Pour some gas down in the carb and see what happens.

Do you have dual tanks? Heard of similar trouble because someone touched the tank switch button by accident. Might be between positions, or flipped to empty tank. I agree with priming the carb. If its got gas/spark, and still won't start I would lean toward your timing. Keep in mind, a worn timing chain likes to jump when you shut off the engine.

Re: 84 305 No start
May be the ignition module in the distributor as well. My 307 has a distributor from my old 350. Ran fine before. Didn't run in the 307. Module was dead. It's a half moon shape in the base of the distributor. Should be two 10 millimeter screws holding it down.

Re: 84 305 No start
You need to verify that you have spark first. Then verify your new fuel pump is working. Since you had the cap off you need to check the firing order. To do this correctly you need to put #1 cylinder at TDC, note where the rotor is pointing and that is your #1 cylinder. Then check the firing order. Also make sure the 12v supply is connected to the BATT terminal on the cap/coil.
