Engine Paint
Howdy, what kind of primer and paint do you guys use on 50 year old motors that will stick and look good for longer than two months? Any favorite kind of degreaser you guys like? Thanks.

The key is getting it clean some times I have used oven cleaner. Now the spray can type paint is ok, but get one with ceramic in it they will last longer.
on my ones that i really want to look sharp I'm gonna prime them with epoxy primer then spray the paint on with the paint gun.I have one I'm gonna epoxy prime then high build then paint the high build should smooth out a lot of the casting.The prettiest I've had I had the sanding castings sanded smooth on the block it was so pretty. As with any successful paints the key is in the prep work the more you put in the better the result will be. Jim |

Prep is definitely the key. Even when I think I did "good enough", I always go one step further with the cleaning.
I start with degreaser, then I will usually use a wire wheel attachment on my hand drill and wire brushes. An acetone wipedown is next. From there I might use sandpaper sometimes. Next comes another acetone wipedown, followed by lacquer thinber. I use regular self etch primer topped off with high heat paint (all spray can stuff) and that holds up for years.

I used Brake cleaner on mine and worked pretty well. Buy about 10 cans and get after it.

What makes paint stick is one thing, a spankin' clean engine. All I've ever done is paint straight-up engine paint, that's it, no primer. Whenever possible, I like to warm the engine or parts as much as possible, before and after.
