Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

This guy is 25min from me, tell about the AC/heat? I'm not familiar with the old AC. I have a 66 c20, should I call the guy?

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

If you're looking to piece a system together, this is a great start. You will still need to find an A/C specific heater box, the plenum for the center dash vents, the faceplate, and the cables. I have a spare plenum, the faceplate is reproduced by one of the board members, and the cables are available in the aftermarket. Just gotta find an A/C specific heater box. It has a seperate flapper door for the box to shut off the heater when the A/C is on.

It can be expensive to piece together a factory system, but the cool factor of having one is worth it.

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

I agree on the cool factor, my whole theme is original looking(before & after pic), what about the mechanics of it all, I would need an old compressor set up as well or were these old ones different? I have looked into an aftermarket AC.

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

I've been building like Jonny Cash, one piece at a time, so I'm ok with getting some here & there, I'm running an older 350. Aside from the parts on Craigslist in Oceanside, the plenum Chevyrestoguy has, an AC heater box & some aftermarket cables, what would I need to have some cold air blowing by summer? I can call dude on Craig's tomorrow if its a good deal. Thoughts?

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

The A/C parts on Craigslist are a good enough deal that if you ever decided not to use it, you can sell it for more than what you paid.

As far as compressors, you can run either an old R6 (big original type) or a later model R4 (pancake) or even a Sanden style that you see on nearly every aftermarket setup. For budget reasons, I would highly recommend converting it to R134, although R12 is a better refrigerant, it has been outlawed for years and is super expensive if you can find it.

I am super busy right now, but when I have time, I can give you the entire rundown on how I used a mix of old and new on my '64. The trick is doing your homework and customizing the original evaporator with a correctly calibrated POA valve for R134. Very easy to do, and places like Vintage Air and Old Air Products can walk you through the entire process.

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

Look at Alex's build thread, he has done a great job. The A/C conversion is only the tip of the iceberg.

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

I got ahold of the guy, he's got a 65. Told him I'd come by Sat if want it. I guess I better research it. Im torn between buying an aftermarket or piece this one together. The old school cool factor is what's got me thinking is it worth the trouble. I'll read Chevyrestoguy thread and find out info

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

One thing to consider is that most, if not all, the aftermarket AC/heating units have recirculating heaters. The original can draws in outside air from the cowl.

There are templates available for the extra holes needed in the firewall and enlarging the dash vent opening. Also the original setup used a 4 row radiator.

Re: NOT MINE.....Somebody needs this!!

I contacted the guy to see if he'd ship, about 20 minutes after the OP... he got back and said he'd get a price, but I haven't heard back from him.
