TH400 Trans Leak at Speedo Housing
Hi all,
I recently changed the speedo housing o ring and driven gear seal to stop a leak. Well it still leaks! After doing some research it looks as though there should have been a small spring clip holding the lip seal in position. However that was missing when I replaced the oring and seal. Would this cause the leak? or perhaps a worn driven gear shaft is the culprit. any ideas appreciated. Last edited by 65 Fastback; 12-26-2015 at 08:19 AM. |

I had the same thing on my 700 r4. I ended up having to buy a whole new one. I went to the transmission shop bought a new one. I put a good coat of dow corning 111 all around the o ring and it never leaked again.

A friend of mine owns a transmission shop and he told me he always puts 2 seals in all of them he works on. I have never seen one with a clip in it.

Make sure there is not a hole all the way through your speedo gear. I had a slow leak and it turned out it had a hole in it. I took the gear out and air was able to blow all the way through it.

I did the same thing and mine still leaks too. I didn't change the inner o ring though, just the outer one. I don't know about the spring clip, maybe someone who knows will enlighten all of us. Let us know when you get it fixed and how you did it.

He did say if your driven gear is old and worn out, fluid could be slipping by on the stem of the driven gear, especially if it has a ring groove where the inner seal rides. I need to remove mine anyway and install one with 2 extra teeth as I changed my rear gears from 308 to 372 and the speedo reads 5/6 mph to fast on the gauge |
