Ignition switch for 54 AD 5.3 swap

What ignition switch would work best for a 5.3 swap into a 54 3100? I want it to remain in the stock location and I would prefer not to have to have a push button as well. Thanks in advance

you just need a universal 4 pin (batt accy ign start) if you already have the key security turned off in the ECM. Ron Francis makes some really nice looking ones in a variety of sizes, speedway sells them too, they are painless type.

Re: Ignition switch for 54 AD 5.3 swap

From my past experience on my truck the universal switches while working quite well tend to come loose in the AD dash after a while.

Personally I like the hidden push button under the dash in easy reach. Turn the key, hit the button and go and as it's a two motion process it's got a built n safety factor.

Re: Ignition switch for 54 AD 5.3 swap

Interesting you opened this topic. Yesterday I installed one from Ron Francis which I bought through Summit Racing. Before this one I was using a universal like the one pictured (Autozone ?). I had 2 issues with it: 1. The rear body interfered with the lower part of the dash so I had to build a different mount and 2. It was hanging the starter contacts even after it had sprung back. The later cost me $100 and 4 hours vacation after my wife used the truck and did not realize what that noise was. Pictured are both. The new one works and feels much better, it also fits in the factory hole.

Re: Ignition switch for 54 AD 5.3 swap

This is what I bought, I got it to fit into my dash where the original switch went:

Another option:

While I like Painless and Ron Francis products (I'm using a Painless wiring harness), I tend to think that on these small parts they are just repackaging them and marking them up a couple hundred percent.

Yeah, if you're going to go with universal, there's quite a few on rockauto. Push button or key.
http://www.rockauto.com/en/tools/ele...er+switch,4700

For something a little more stock looking, find a used switch from a 67-72 gm truck. According to this post http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...05&postcount=7 they started using an accessory position in 68ish. The poster is a locksmith. (found that via google, researching as I go because I'll need one too) Once you have a used switch with a key, you can buy the replacement electrical part from the auto parts store if you want.

More googly says an 81 P30 used an in dash switch. $7-20 on rockauto.
http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/c...er+switch,4700
Clicking on the part # on rockauto tells what else it fits. Clicking on the part # for the AC delco says 67/68+ which would kind of confirm the locksmith's statement. Clicking on "Info" for the delco switch says it indeed has an accessory position. 1981, of course it does.

Find a used switch from one of those listed by clicking on the ac delco part # and get it with the key, plug/connector and pigtail of wiring and you can have a gm key rather than a little universal key or key with some other guy's name on it.

Me personally, I'll be putting mine in dash, to the right of the column.
