hei distributor for 67 c10 w/327
giving my son a hand getting his grandpas 1967 c10 back on the road. i remember my early years replacing and adjusting points and would rather have an hei. i can find a lot of info on converting the old distributor to a hei and some info on which ones to use from a junkyard. the latter is what we are interested in. can anyone give specific info on what years to use such as any 350 from 74-78. does it have to be small block specific. will any gm vehicle from certain years work. thanks for info

Must be from a small block or big block Chevy. You can use any from 75-85 pretty much, just get the 4 pin module. I would recommend just buying a new aftermarket one. They are available for less than $100 with cap, rotor, coil, and module. Just add a wiring harness. I use the terminal marked IGN in the fuse box and just plug in a 10 ga wire.

Re: hei distributor for 67 c10 w/327
Welcome to you from eastern parts of Arkansas. Now any small or big block Chevy motored vehicle will have the right HEI. Your looking about the right range in the early 80's they put a what I call a 4 pin HEI in and it had some timing deal [ESC] they could work if you hook the black and white wires together on the module but why not look to a Skip White. i know a lot of people here run them but still a lot of people talk bad about them but for the most part the reviews are pretty good. You can buy one with cap rotor and coil from E-bay for less than $70 or so bucks. that in my book beats looking for one and then bring it in just to find you have to buy a coil or module or something like that that will end up more in the long run.
Now I have heard of those who weren't happy replace the Skip White module with a good Delco and that made them happy with the dist. I have thought about putting one in my C60 [1965] with a 292 that i plan on using to haul scrap from my shop with. |

Chevy V8 distributors are the same BBC/SBC. You want an early style HEI with the 4 leads to the module. Order one for the same type of C/10 but as a "1975", and you'll be good.
I've found that a new HEI is better [and cheaper] than replacing all the components from a junkyard Delco-Remy HEI. Do not use the old resistor wire to the points coil (+). You need to run a fresh wire 10 or 12 Ga. from Ign Unfused to the HEI B+ terminal. That way you get a full 12 VDC at all times. The OEM resistance line 16 Or/White/ppl will pass 12 volts initially then as it warms up, increases resistance, dropping voltage to 7- 9 VDC. Bad for HEI coil, but good for not burning up points.

You can get a Skip White Ready to run HEI unit. I think $39, I use one. I spent twice as much on wires as the distributor. It burns all the gas and has given no problems. Spend your money on wires. Get a hot coil. You will burn gas.

If you buy a new HEI unit, be sure to go to the local GM dealership and buy a module made in the USA. The new units will come with one made in China and it will just quit working.

If you want to spend a few more bucks but have ZERO issues, use a DUI HEI. They have a lot of options for all vehicles..
http://performancedistributors.com/p...-distributors/ Stands for Davis Unified Ignition and it is a bit pricey, but works perfectly. Another option is CRT, they offer an HEI for our engines for a lot less than DUI. http://www.crtperformance.com/crt/di...or-detail.html Most of the ebay cheap ones are chink and not worth using in my book.. I have only used the DUI in the past and never had a problem, but I may try the CRT as it has very good reviews on another board.. Good luck, SG

Meanwhile, the factory unit out of a '75 Monte Carlo still runs strong with the original module, I pressure wash the engine, it doesn't care. It seems there is a HUGE difference between GM and knock-off. But I'm not speaking of any particular brand (just a whole country - China).

Re: hei distributor for 67 c10 w/327
Basically, I refused to get shamed into not getting a skip white. What's the point for me to put bucks into a tired 100k+ 350. I've been running it for over two years with no trouble. Quite a few others are running them as well. They are a no brainer drop in with a hotter coil.
Don't get talked into a setup that you don't need. Best is not always the best choice. Keep that in mind as you delve into the world of fixing up a money sump. Get a decent ignition when the time is appropriate.

Re: hei distributor for 67 c10 w/327
I don't save money on ladders, Lasik, distributors, pitman arms, and anything else that has a single point of failure.
Your tired 350 still has seven more cylinders if one quits, but if you want it to get you home, there are certain parts that MUST work near-perfectly, and ignition is one of those. Hope it works out. It'd be nice if there were indeed a reliable source of cheap HEI units, I just know I've never seen one. But then I've never had a SW, whatever it is.

Re: hei distributor for 67 c10 w/327
See what I mean?
NO... buying a distributor or ignition components are not life altering decisions. Hey why stop at ladders and eye surgery, why not make it as important as pacemaker implants. Yes, it's an inexpensive component... but hey, I've seen expensive components fail too. I was not born yesterday; been using aftermarket parts for years. Too funny. HEI same as Ladder or Lasik eye surgery... funny! carkivey3: Odds are your new distributor will work out fine, and work for years. I'm a big fan of spending money on good wires for throughput. Hey watch out for those single points of failure.
