keep the inline 250 or move on to a 307 sbc
Since I got my 68 gmc I have loved my inline 6 250ci, It is diffrent then most of the 67-72 trucks I see at the shows.. I added a Clifford intake and a holley 390,headers and a few other little upgrades.. At the shows the engine gets alot of attention even for being dirty and always have been proud of it,happy about the fact that I held off the temptation to throw in a sbc.. I have been pricing engine rebuild to see if I could get 1 horse power per cubic inch but the machine shop prices have pretty much crushed that idea.
I have not thought much about doing an v8 swap till an opportunity has come across my path.. a perfectly running 307 that orignally came out of a 1972 c10 but has found it home in a 60's Era Vette for the last 20 years. The owner wanted a more proper plant for his Vette and did a motor swap a few months back storing the 307 in the garage since . The owner painted the motor last year and is including the intake the MSD ignition and distributer.. asking 400 bucks. Do I stay loyal to my 250 or sell the upgraded parts and move in to the 307?? I do not imagine the swap will be too difficult, It should bolt right up to my th400, possibly need a bigger radiator and new/move the motor mounts? Any and all opinions are appreciated... A 307 isn't much of an upgrade over what you have. If you are happy with the 250, I would leave it.

If you have the money to do so, keep the 250 and buy the 307 separately. If not, rebuild the 250

I'd certainly keep the I6! SBC's are all over the place. With the 250 you have "Six Appeal"!

You couldn't pay me to use a 307 in any application other than a stock rebuild for a factory correct restoration.
Keep the I-6 or find a 350. Gary

I have a 250 in Goldilocks and a 462 in Samson. So, I know the 250 and the limits. I just don't think the gains with the 307 swap will be worth it.
I'd keep the 6 if it was my truck and nothing was wrong with it. Plus.....it's just different than the cookie cutter V8 trucks. And I said that owning a cookie cutter V8 truck.

I hate to say it because i want to buy your valve cover, carb headers and intake
But yea i'd stay away from the 307 and go for a 350 at a minimum.

I too think you should stick with your 250. 307's were not a great engine. The only good thing about a 307 is you can use the crank/rods , buy a new set of 327 pistons, and slap into a nice 350 block. Instant 327....

Take a weekend and yank the front clip off of your truck and give that engine bay and engine a super detail job. A little bit of dough, a lot of elbow work and it will look awesome under the hood.

With so many guys jumping onto the LS train or going big block the 6's will become "The stock engine to have " especially the 292 . there are more than a few 250's laying in garages and sheds after being considered junk not too long ago .Now I've been noticing more people wanting to hold onto them and the prices are starting to climb .Even if you decide to go V8 Hold onto that 6, Pickle it and keep it in dry storage In just a few short years it could be worth a pretty penny to the guys wanting to stay or go back stock.

I am keeping the i6 in my build. Stuffing a 700R4 behind it. I just like the novelty of running split manifold headers etc. I'm building your exact setup Clifford intake and Holly 390 carb.
I have a 350 SBC in my '34 chevy, and a 302 5.0 HO in my '41..... looking forward to the sexy six.

I have a 307...if you are going to make the jump to a V8, at a minimum go stock 350. Then if you get the urge for more horse power you can tweak the 350 a lot easier than the 307.

The 283 was a great engine. In 1970 I was fooled into thinking the 307 was an updated, improved version of the 283. I bought a new C20 with a 307 and 3 speed. I had an 8' overhead camper on it for trips only and sometimes towed a boat while the camper was on. I didn't push the engine hard. At 40,000 it needed a valve job and was using a quart of oil between changes. At that same time my brother had a '69 C10 short box step side with a 250 and 3 speed. He had an overhead camper custom built for that truck and also towed a boat. We traveled together quite a bit and that inline 6 did everything my 307 did. Got better gas mileage and ran to 60,000 miles with no mechanical work. He traded it For a new '73 short box 454 Cheyenne Super. Black with blue interior and put Ansen aluminum slots and 50 series tires on it. That's another story for another day.

I'm going to a V8 change myself , out with the 6 in with a 8. I like my 67 w the 250 l6 but I always wanted the 327 and since I found an all original 67 truck motor 327 I'm making the swap. I don't know your experience with a motor swap like this but this is my first swap. 6 to a 8. I did a swap years back , replaced a 6 with a 6 not hard but everything was identical. What I'm trying to say is be prepared, if you don't know already, with all the parts needed to make the change, I'm sure you don't want any down time looking for parts you'll still need like motor stands, motor mounts, exhaust system, pullies, brackets, wiring, drive shaft so on, I'm still figuring it all out myself, I don't want any down time myself I like driving my truck whenever I can. Have a blast with your truck your decision.
