High and thanks- 66 C10 and 80 C10

I have been reading and learning from these forums for a while now and thought I should post a hi and thanks for all the great information.

I picked up a 66 C10 a while back after looking for several years. It is fairly straight but has the usual rust. I plan on this being a long term project for me and my two boys. I also found a complete and stock 1980 C10 that I plan on transferring the front suspension, power disk brakes and power steering from, then parting out the rest to help pay for it.

I am planning on swapping in the rear axle to get the 5 lug to match the front and match the track with. I know I will have to add perches and a track bar mount, but that does not worry me. If there are any other negatives on the rear axle swap feel free to chime in.

Nice project. I like a wheel with a little more lip showing on the back so doing an axle swap to 5 lug instead of the complete rear allows for about an inch more on the wheel. Captnfab here on the board has the saddles to weld to the other rear. Just use caution when you weld it to keep the heat down. Keeps the ends from pulling and adding caster to the rear.

Welcome to the forum

It sounds like you are heading in the right direction with your project. In addition to what Jimmy said about the width, the gears in each differential should be considered as to which one will suit the use of the truck the best. Both differentials should be 12 bolts.

Thanks for the pointers. Would not have thought about the axle pulling. I haven't got my mind set on the rear end yet. Need to see if one or the other is limited slip or not. That and the gear ratio will play into it.

My plan is to eventually put and LS into it but for now I want to see if I can get the 250 to run.

If they are both 12 bolts you can swap the gears if needed. 99% chance the gear in the 66 is 3.73. On your donor is the SPID decal still in the glove box? If so you may be able to get the gear info off of it. It is not hard to distort a housing, carefull welding helps out. Here is a little thing from Joe Gibbs racing on there axle guy. I do have the sticker but I have never really understood how to decode them. Where can you find what the codes mean.
