Tired of heater core leaks

Heater core is leaking for the third time. I've ordered a heater assembly from Classic Parts of KCMO. Catalog says "fits the older trucks well". I'll keep you guys posted when I install it.

You said you are on the third repair, right? Maybe you are using to high a radiator cap psi. Should be no more than 7psi if running a stock heater radiator. Randy

I'm using the cap that came with my two row Champion aluminum radiator, pressure unknown. You may be right but it's a moot point now. New one arrives tomorrow. Never got much heat out of the old timer anyway.

I'm in the same boat, need a new heater core as the one that came with the truck is bad. I'm also going to run the aluminum radiator with my SBC, wondering if the core will work with the rad. I sure hope so, I will need the heater in my area.

Some of the new heater cores aren't rated very high either. The heater core I got from Classic Parts says this **Not for use with modern upgrades over 4# radiator pressure caps.** on their website. That's for part# 68-221

I didn't notice this until after I installed it.

The one from Jim Carter's says it is rated for higher pressures. That's for the deluxe - it looks like yours is the circular core model?.

Anyway, I called to make sure ( they said yes ) ...so we'll see when I install it this spring.

When I had mine repaired the guy tested mine at 14 psi but suggested that I run a 7 psi cap. I am running a 2 core alum. rad. A friend of mine runs a SBC and the same rad. as mine, with a 7 psi cap and has no over heat problems. Randy

FWIW I have been running the stock heater core on mine for over 37K miles using a 16# cap and a modern LS engine with no issues.

Got the new heater in. Classic Parts 68-991-A. Very compact and throws out a lot of heat. I needed to drill a few holes but overall an easy install. I'll get some pics posted when techno-kid gets home from school.

Looks good....but a couple questions. How does it mount? Does it use the typical fresh air system? Any problem with a V8 radiator pressure? Can you post a pic of the firewall after installation? I checked out the Classic site, $200 for the whole thing sounds good as most places want $170 for just the heater core. Thanks !!

3 studs go thru the firewall. You need to drill 5 holes. two 1" for the hoses and three 3/8" for the mounting studs. If you position it right one or more of your existing holes may work. Come with paper templates for drilling. No mention of cap pressure in the instructions. Comes with three speed fan switch.
