Refinish truck bed wood

I bought this truck with a wooden bed that is shedding the clear coat finish. How much of the bed do I need to disassemble to sand and refinish the wood?
All of the bolts and stainless strips are like new. Someone just did a lousy job of staining and clear coating the wood during restoration. It used to look like the orange spots you see before it turned gray.Name: IMG_0606.jpg

Re: Refinish truck bed wood

its not that hard but I would remove it all and refinish it. the pain looks really nice so don't cheap out ( not that you would but)

This is quite common in sunny climates and little or no protection from the sun.

Re: Refinish truck bed wood

I've watched utube videos and read numerous posts about refinishing the wood. They all seem to be with the bed off. If I remove all the carriage bolts, take the fender wells out, will the boards slide out? Just trying to get a feel of the work involved to do this project. Thanks

Re: Refinish truck bed wood

Disassembling the whole thing would net the best results, but I suppose it's possible to carefully avoid the strips when sanding off the old finish. It might even work better to remove what left of the old stuff with a scraper.
Done correctly, scraping would leave the wood surface clean, smooth, and ready for a new finish. The down side of doing this with the strips in place is not being able to get into the grooves very well and risking eventual failure starting from those edges.
Also, next time make sure to use a high grade exterior finish which has UV blockers in it.
