correct stock piston for a 230??

1 states 1/16 ring instead of 5/16??

Your engine a 230 or a 250? Both pistons mentioned are for 250's but I'm wanting to be sure. lol

It's a 230 but these are the only ones I've seen correct with D on the flat top
Were 230 pistons different and do I have a 250? I'm pretty sure it's a 230 unless it was end of 65 model year that they put in 250s

I've never actually gotten a "fact" label on this, but I believe 230 pistons were flat tops. 250's and 292's used the .300 dish pistons. If you can get me an engine number from the block I may be able to decode it. Unless you have already.

I'm leaning towards a 250. Bores are the same for both engines, but strokes are different. The 250 being longer. The 230 has a taller compression height of 1.795 as to the 250 at 1.655. That's why I'm also sure the 230 has flat tops. I'm thinking yours is a 250. Let me make a call to a fellow inliner and I'll get a for sure answer.

You have a 250 and you'll want the piston with the 5/16 rings. The 230 has a flat top with valve reliefs and the 250 has the dish piston. If you were to put 250 pistons in a 230 your compression would drop. The piston with the 1/16 ring must be a newer design or something. My racing pistons in my 292 have that same ring size.

crazy! all ive read says 250 wasnt in the 65 pickup

guess ill be looking for one of those then

with head off can you measure at TDC from piston to head surface to determine stroke?
or to measure anything of value?

You are correct. The 1965 C10 did not have a 250ci. If you need 230 pistons, I have 6 230 pistons that I saved from my 1965 230ci. You are welcome to have them all or however many you want - FREE. Send me a PM. I can post a picture of my 230 pistons if you want me to.

Yeah, measure from the top of the piston to the top of the cylinder and that'll get you pertty close.
250 stroke is 3.530
230 stroke is 3.250
So estimate 3 and a 1/2 or 3 and a 1/4.

Anyone could have changed the motor out through the years.

Since you have the head off. Just measure distance from deck to piston at bottom of the stroke.

230 = 3.250" ... 250 = 3.530"

Boy my curiosity is peaked now.....wonder if using 230 pistons in a 250 would boost compression. Rod length may need to be changed, but I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet.

I was gonna get a 250 built. Everyone said to use 307 flat top pistons and deck the head and go bigger valves. I got a practically new 230 for dirt cheap so budget minded common sense won over and I'll use the 230.

That's the one big advantage of the 250 is that 307 pistons. They are alot cheaper than the Ross pistons. lol
