Buying New 10067353 Crate Engine

I'm going to be ordering a new GM 10067353 350 crate engine next week and I need to know if there is something I have forgotten to order with it: Exhaust manifold gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, fuel pump gaskets and water pump gaskets.

Carb gasket, distributor gasket, coolant, maybe some oil and a new filter for after camshaft break-in. These are great engines, just wish I had the cash to buy one for my truck.

EDIT- dont forget spark plugs. And this might be a good time for a new cap, rotor and plug wires.

I see you are in Sacramento. Do you know any one reliable that can pull the old motor and install the new one?. I have a bad back and was going to have the dealership do the swap

Not around your area but I know of a shop or 2 around here but its a bit of a drive for you. Id give you a hand myself if you were closer.

Thanks, The dealer is in rural area and said he could do the swap for $800-1000 which isn't bad for a GM shop

I have never used exhaust manifold gaskets they come without and not needed unless they're warped.

I've have mine surfaced before to make sure then other times didn't never had a leak either way.

Just make sure to follow (or they follow) GM's crate engine break-in instructions. Here are the instructions for the 350/290 #12499529 engine. They're the same as for the #10067353 (which is the better choice between the two), and the break-in instructions begin in the middle of page 3.

The biggest things to note are:

1) no synth oil until 3000 miles.

2) The early oil and filter changes.

3) (Not in the instructions) The use of high-zinc (ZDDP) oil, break-in oil, or ZDDP oil additives. My own recommendation is a break-in additive in the first two loads of oil, and then use 1/2 bottle of ZDDPPlus per oil change. At 3000 miles, switch to Mobil1 10W30 with 1/2 bottle of ZDDPPlus per oil change.

Later these instructions say not to hook up the vacuum advance on the #12499529 engine, which is complete nonsense. Both engines should have a vacuum advance using the AR23/VC1853 vacuum advance can.

New thermostat, new thermostat housing, might need an oil filter bypass, new hoses and belts, new exhaust donuts(if stock manifolds), new exhaust manifold studs, if the dealer can get the PROPER ones - a new temp sender and oil sender(if needed). Break in oil and a couple of gallons of new antifreeze. Might consider new motor mounts - easy to replace during the swap.

Some of this may be included in the dealer's price. Check before they start.

Have your flex plate examined. Easy to replace while swapping motors. PITA to replace later. Ask if the dealer knows how to properly shim starters. If they don't, expect to be replacing starters and flex plates. Consider getting a new starter. Easy to put on and properly shim while the engine is on the stand. Much harder when on the truck.

That's not a bad price at all for a dealer. Hopefully they do it right.

I agree that it's worth the $500 extra to have 290hp rather than 195hp.

You do realize that those 2 engines are exactly the same with the exception of the camshaft, right? $500 extra for a 40yr old grind that you can get onli e for under $100 not to mention being way too big for the heads and compression. Best bet is to buy the lower hp engine and add a cam more suited to the heads and compression

Better thing to do is buy something worth spending the cash on..... SBC 427 600+ hp

I rode in the car (69 Camaro) it was in and it is an amazing engine!

That's a nice little engine. I had one in my 85 with an RV style cam. The only issue I ever had was when the pickup strainer came off in the pan. Easy fix. Nothing hurt. Caught it in time. Good luck man.
