I just had this same conversation about the same thing that happened to me about 5 years ago with a buddy of mine. Same thing happened to him. We both have used braided line for years now. If you want to save a couple bucks order a pre-made line for brake lines from earls. I have always used -4 an line. They have several lengths to choose from.
I am actually picking one up tonight for one of my projects.

Steel line is just as good if you have the flare tools, and will cost 1/3 as much, if not less.

good thing you caught in time, or worse things, very bad things would have happened, one time i smelled a bit of oil burning in old robert, only to discover that my valve cover gasket sprung a very big leak and I lost 3 quarts of oil in a one hour drive

I once had a rear main seal blow on the freeway. I looked down and saw no oil pressure (after the burning smell). 3.5 quarts low. Filled it up and was able to drive it home. Three days later the rods started knocking. You are luckier than I was.
