Which D position best to use.

Hi All. Hope this doesn't sound like a daft question. I have a 87 GMC Sierra Stepside. 305 engine. The trans selector has two D positions, one with a circle around (overdrive). My drive to work is mostly following traffic and not a lot of free moving highway. I find that my trans wants to drop in to last gear way too soon. Then when I accel it changes up then when I even off it changes back in to top again. Because of the traffic going varying speeds this constant changing in to the last two gears gets annoying. So my solution is to put it in to D (with the circle around it) This way the last gear is avoided. Is this the way to go or is there an adjustment I can do to stop the last gear selecting too soon.

Exclamation Re: Which D position best to use.

Hey from sunny Central Florida, You should always drive the truck in the Overdrive position unless you are towing a trailer or boat.

It sound's like your TV Cable may need to be adjusted. that could be why the trans is hunting in and out of the gears.

Just search this site for TV CABLE ADJUSTMENT.

G'day Mate!

I'm of the use D until you get on the highway and save all the shifting in and out of overdrive from the always fluctuating speeds in traffic.

FWIW, that's what the owners manual specified back when they were new.

x3. I bought a 87 SWB brand new. The dealer told me numerous times to not use O/D unless I was on the highway.

I always pull mine down to drive in town and shift it back to overdrive when I hit the freeway. Thats one nice thing about electronic transmissions, you can program that out of them so they dont go into overdrive so soon.
