300$ brake shoes?!?!?

It's that time! Motors coming out to get worked on and I've got the longhorn in the shop two weeks tops (pops blessing). I decided now was an appropiate time to do the brakes, however... I went to my local oreilys and they wanted 75 bucks a corner for shoes.. Just shoes. That's gonna add up fast considering I am going to do wheel cylinders, rubber lines, hardware, and get the drums spun.. Any idea on somewhere that I can get parts cheaper? I know autozone is the same price and Napa is usually in the same ballpark and my local shops can't even get them in. I understand that the brakes are one ton due to the longhorn package but it shouldn't be that much should it? Here's a picture of the current shop state of affairs..

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

it's a sad situation when I can buy parts online and have them delivered to the house cheaper than I can drive to town and buy them .

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

Just redid my whole system on my c10. I used napa ultra premium shoes, I know yours is a one ton so they are the 2 3/4" wide shoe, mine is the 2"wide shoe. The 75.00 is for a set, front or back. Dont loose the napa box the shoes came in or you wont get your core deposit back.

Register on line for napa to get your 10% discount on parts, order everything on line and pick up at the store. If your going to spend 300.00 on shoes only then I would buy ceramic shoes from muscle car brakes online.

I upgraded the system to power assisted drums, so far im very happy with the way the truck stops. Maybe in a year or so I will upgrade to discs, but I have to many other projects to tackle right now.

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

nothing bad to say about rock auto....usually have a couple different brands to choose from so you can make your cost vs quality decision....but obviously you have to wait for them to show up....depends which location they're shipped from....some stuff has taken a week, some showed in 2 days...in the chain store world auto zone seems to have lowest prices around here, and gets stuff from ''rare parts'' for vintage stuff that others dont even list...napa and oreillys have a much wider selection on regular stuff,(with generally higher quality) napa being the most expensive

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

Is your Longhorn a 3/4 or 1ton? Dana 60, or Eaton? What year? I have a '71 Cheyenne Super 3/4, coil spring, rear shoes 2 1/2, 1 tons might have had the wider shoes, depending on rear end. Cost of back shoes on my truck, $38. Ray 248pg. Bought wheel cylinder rebuild kits, $12.50, just hone them out, cheaper than buying new ones. I don't buy from chain stores, all local at The Dalles Auto Parts, in The Dalles Oregon. Owner is very helpful with getting parts for my '71.

I always use rock auto.

just picked up a set of 4 KYB gas-a-just shocks for like $115 vs $40-50 per corner from the local autozone/orieley/napa/advance

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

My understanding was that all Longhorns are on one time brakes and suspension? Is that correct?

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

No, I just sold a '70 3/4 Longhorn with a Dana 60, also sold a 1ton'72 frame and box with a Eaton. Also have a project '71 3/4 with a Eaton. Longhorns could have either Dana 60 or Eaton rear ends. 1-ton had the Eaton, 3/4 could have either, just depended on how it was ordered. Over load springs were optional.

I just ordered a set for my 3/4 off amazon and paid $18. shipped to my door. It helps to shop around. Don't let the local guys gouge you... My 70 has a Dana 60 rear.

I have never seen brake shoes sold buy the corner. I have always seen them sold a complete set front or rear.

That's what I thought too? Selling individual is silly no one does just one wheel. So how can I determine wether it's an eaton or Dana? Are the brakes the same on each rearends?

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

Eaton have a "round" inspection cover on the 3rd member, Dana 60 has a flat side on both ends by axle tube. Also is your truck a 3/4 or 1ton? I have not seen a Dana 60 of this era used on a 1-ton. Also look at your vin plate on the drivers door jamb, to see what the G.V.W. rating is. Dana 60 should be 5500 Lbs. Or post a picture and anyone will tell you what it is,just by looking at it.

When I look that up at the zone its $75 for the pair, both rear wheel shoes 13 x 2 1/2. I don't think anybody sells shoes by the wheel.

And the GVW on the vin tag is 7500. That is a one ton then, yes?

Re: 300$ brake shoes?!?!?

Just like the other guy posted earlier size is 13x2 1/2. Checked this in G.M. parts catalog. You have either a 3/4 with heavy duty rear end or a 1-ton. From what I could look up, both had the same rear end, if ordered that way, that's why some parts stores said 1-ton. I have several original G.M. parts catalogs, same ones the dealers used year ago. I have both American and Canadian versions. Hope all this information helps out.
