Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
I've spent 3 and a half years restoring the family truck, and lo and behold the first drive out some guy in a red chevy truck kicks up a rock on the highway as I'm driving into Fresno and cracks the front windshield.
Needing to replace this glass, I am finding that prices are widely varied but it does appear that the part I need is a #DW587. Do any of you guys have any experience replacing these front wrap-around windshields? They range from $275 plus freight to $420 plus freight. Freight is $145. Is green tint the only option? Are there any American made windshields or are they all through this JR Distributing? Any body shed some light on this problem? Tom

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
Call some of the smaller windshield installers. They should be able to find the best deal for you. I'm a long ways from Cali , but I found one here for my 62 that will run 400.00 installed. 300.00 for the glass,100.00 installation and if they break it ,its on them to replace it. I just have to supply the rubber seal. We didn't really discuss where they were getting it from or wheather it was tinted or clear.

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
I tried several small independent shops here in Fresno and evidently they all must be sourcing from the same place, a distributor in So Cal. They seem to all have the same piece of green glass with with a scratch in it. So now, instead of $500 installed they want $500 plus $120-$150 to r and r?
I looked up the part number online and I can get it for $275 plus $145 freight. Saves me some money but I was reluctant to buy "cheap glass"...that's why I was asking where you guys were buying yours... T

I had a perfectly good used one I couldn't give away. You might look around and get lucky. The only problem there is the glass installers usually won't guarantee they won't break it putting it in, and if they do too bad for you, no warranty.

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
A Few Years ago local shops were only selling the green tint or gray shaded green tint.
I found a clear Windshield on Craigslist, or can order a new clear one from classic industries or similar;

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
Thanks for the tips...I went on Classic Industries website and they have the clear with tint windshield for about $260 including coupon. Unfortunately they want $195 freight to get it 200 miles up the highway. I may have to just go and pick one up...make a road trip out of it....

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
Tom, I don't want to hi-jack your thread here, but has anyone put one of these 60-63 windshields in THEMSELVES? I have a '61 GMC with the stainless trim that I need to replace one in and thought about giving it a whirl. I found numerous videos on YT of people installing them but none from the 60-66 years. There is one with a 67-72 Chevy that looks close so I may use that for reference. Thinking the rope method may work? Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
Great post going here...
As far as glass goes, I found a place in Tempe selling the glass for $282.00. The guy there was really helpful. I had options for green, green with tint, clear, clear with tint, grey and grey with tint. Pretty nice... Turns out of this glass is drop shipped out of So Cal (JR Distributors) and freight ran another $120 for the ride 200 miles to Fresno. I could not find anyone (including the local shops) who was getting glass somewhere else other then JD. They are probably an importer and if you guys want, I'll post some photos when it is done. I don't think there is a U.S. Manufacturer for these anymore. If someone knows something different, then chime in!

Re: Front Windshield Replacement 61 Truck Help
I have taken my '63's windshield out and put it back in a few times (without chrome trim) and found it was pretty straight forward - no issues. Later I got some windshield trim and a trim style gasket. I NEVER want to install the trim windshield & gasket EVER again. What a brutal job that was.
I did a friends '64 w/trim - that was a bear as well. Greg
