250 T5 starter

so i hope i dont have to pull the transmission and remove the flywheel. I used a clutch and flywheel from a 85 camaro and it seems this is smaller than my original was. currently when i hit the starter the starter wheel pops out and doesn't contact the flywheel due to I believe it being smaller. i checked the starter for a 85 camaro and it looks like it mounts differently than my 65 c10 starter. i also checked the other compatibly for the flywheel and it is also a 66 C10 look a starter up for a 66 C10 and it is the same part number as a 65 C10. any other suggestion?

Bad news. You need a 168 tooth flywheel. The auto parts vendors list the 1985 Camaro V8 flywheel as having 153 teeth and yes it is smaller than the 168 tooth C10 flywheel. That's why your starter won't engage. The 168 tooth flywheel is very common in early trucks. If you were closer, I'd give you one of the extras I have. Rockauto sells a brand new 168 tooth flywheel made for an 11" clutch disc for only $60 plus shipping. Local auto parts stores might have a similar price. Shoot! I had my flywheel resurfaced and that cost me $55 so the Rockauto price is reasonable.

UGH... learn something new i guess... would i need to get a new clutch also or would my current clutch 85 camaro clutch work?

this is the LAST thing i need also. i have everything set timing roughly in and just ready to start it.. i keep telling myself pulling the trans and bell housing wont take that long. i know i could get it done in less than a day

The trans comes out and goes back in easier each time you do it. Before you spend money on a flywheel, make sure you can get a clutch package for it that matches your T5 splines. Do you have 10 splines? 26 splines? 14?

Try to get an 11" clutch disc with a compatible flywheel, but 10" will work too (standard for a C10 clutch package). The 11" should be about the same price as the 10".

Edit: Call my friend Richie and ask him what 168 tooth flywheel will accept a 26 spline 10.4" clutch package. He may know what flywheel takes an 11" clutch kit with 26 splines. I know a 1992 Camaro 5.0L clutch package has 26 splines and is 10.4".

Will I be able to remove the clutch and flywheel without removing the bell housing?.. Just rotate the clutch around till all bolts are loose then reach up and remove the flywheel bolts?

I actually tried removing my 168 tooth flywheel last week when I had it on the run stand. I couldn't. But it wouldn't hurt to try. This evening when I get home from work I'll go and try again on a spare engine I have in the garage.
Your 153 tooth FW is smaller so it will come out pretty easy I'd guess.
If the bell must be removed, just use a block of wood and a floor jack to support the engine beneath the oil pan so you can get the bell off without the engine tilting.

I was able to remove the incorrect clutch and flywheel without removing the bellhousing. it was no fun but doable. the correct parts will be at the auto parts store tomorrow AM.

Once you're to the point of having the trans out, it is only 8 bolts and the bellhousing will be off and out of your way. It is a whole lot easier to change the flywheel and clutch without the bellhousing in the way.

So i Finally got the correct clutch/flywheel. i ordered from oriellys as i try to buy local. its easy if parts are not correct and can usually get them that day. I pick up the parts and want to double check the cluch/flywheel bolt together. no matter what i do i cant get the bolts to line up. i measure the flywheel and its about 1-1/2 to big. go down and get a 2nd one. its the exact same as first. guy behind the counter is unsure of what is going on but is aware its the incorrect flywheel. i go to autozone and they cant even get a fly wheel. so i go to napa they got one at a different store. go there and boom its the correct flywheel and 50 bucks cheaper than oreillys was.

Yeah, it's a pain matching up parts. Auto parts stores usually only want to type info into a computer therefore, you can't say "I need the right clutch package for the flywheel I have in my hand". Their eyes just roll back into their heads. LOL! Glad you got the parts you need.

And usually if you go to NoReillys, they are already shaking their head "no" as they are typing. NAPA (at least ours) seems to be much more willing to match stuff up and actually know what they are doing.
