Dana 70 HD capacity

Supposedly everybody has a different answer on gear oil capacity. I find most say 3.5 on a typical 70.

I have a long width D70 HD so wouldn't that take more than 3.5 (starting bone dry also btw) ?

Also overfilling if by chance a quart in your opinion would that really cause any issues?

Why would you want to overfill it by one quart?

Just fill it until some dribbles out the fill hole. You want this level so that lube reaches the axle seals and keeps them wet but doesn't blow past them and ruin your brake shoes.

Was out the truck at the time and sitting pinion down when we did the seal.May of put 4.5 in it heh, have to check it later. Was bone dry though before we sealed it up.

Some stated the HD version took a bit more anyway /shrug

I'm betting he does not want to.

If you do over fill t by a quart, it will blow out through the seals and ruin your brakes.

This is how its done. But the axle needs to be installed in its final position first. Filling it with the pinion pointing down while on jack stands is not recommended.

This is exactly why, I have the axle in however shopping for 14 ply dually tires @ 31-32" atm then when its ready to roll we will adjust the fluid levels.

It's a case of buying too much and not being able to put it all on at once.
