Is this a 63 rear diff?

Want to make sure this is a 63C 10 rear differential before I have a rebuilt. Can anyone verify this for me?

Are the backing plates pressed on or bolted on would be the first indicator.

Re: Is this a 63 rear diff?

Backing plates are pressed on.
Thanks so much for the help guys!
A local shop will rebuild totally with 5 lug 30 spline axles, 3:42 gears, Eaton posi, new bearings, new yoke, for ~$1500.

Re: Is this a 63 rear diff?

If it is still inside after 53 years, then it will be a 17 spline posi. Depending on which posi unit it is, the spider gears may or may not be available. Plus the fact that it will likely need rebuilt. The cost of rebuilding a posi is nearly as much as buying a new unit.

Question for the rear end experts. My brother has a 70 C10 with a super brute Posi. I am told that super brutes are no longer available for 63 10.
Would a normal Eaton Posi hold up in my truck?

Are there different/stronger Posies a ailble for our 60's trucks?

Re: Is this a 63 rear diff?

The '63-'82 truck 12 bolt housings are all basically the same. The differences with the '63 12 bolt is 1) The pressed on backing plates and 2) The 17 spline axles 3) A different wheel/axle bearing and seal. As far as the carrier is concerned, any truck 12 bolt carrier will fit a '63 truck 12 bolt housing.
